Timothy Helmuth Obituary

Timothy Paul Helmuth, 56, of Bloomington, Illinois, died Jan. 2, 2026, after a lengthy illness.

Tim was born April 7, 1969, in Goshen, Indiana, to Mervin and Sharon (Moyer) Helmuth. He grew up in Goshen alongside his younger brother, Todd, and spent many of his childhood summers with his family in Hesston, Kansas, and at Camp Amigo in Michigan.

Tim graduated from Goshen High School in 1987 and from Goshen College in 1991 with a bachelor's degree in business. He worked in information technology and was employed at Illinois State University in Bloomington, where he had worked for the past 12 years. He enjoyed being outdoors and, in recent years, especially valued time spent camping and on the water with his children and grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and his brother.

In 2020, Tim survived a serious medical emergency and made a remarkable recovery, allowing him additional years with his family.

Tim is survived by his two sons, Getty L. (Stephanie Flores) Helmuth and Micah A. (Melanie Hertzler) Helmuth, both of Goshen; two granddaughters, Anabel and Viviana Helmuth, to whom he was especially devoted; his father, Mervin Helmuth of Goshen; his brother, Todd (Becky Whitmer) Helmuth of Goshen; and his former wife, Jo (Stauffer) Helmuth, mother of his sons.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Sharon Helmuth.

A celebration of life open house will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 24, at North Goshen Mennonite Church, 501 N. 8th St., Goshen, with a time of sharing stories and memories beginning at 4 p.m. A memorial gathering will also take place this summer at Clinton Lake in Illinois.

Tim will be sorely missed by all in the Dept of Politics and Government at Illinois State. He was a wonderful colleague and friend, and we will remember him fondly. Our thoughts are with his family and friends during this difficult time.

Tim was such a kind person, always willing to help with a tech issue or just to ask how one was doing. My son (Sam) went to ISU and hung around my office or lab a lot, and also remembers him fondly and wants to express his condolences to his loved ones.

The memory of Tim's sly smile paired with that twinkle in his eye is bringing a smile to my own face as I think about him. He was a friend and colleague. He once asked my son to dog sit Milo and then asked me what types of snacks my son liked so that he would have something at his house for him to eat. My son was so impressed that several bags of hot Cheetos were waiting there just for him. Tim occasionally brought me a lunch sized sampling of the food he had made the night before so that I could have a decent lunch at work. And it was always so good! When I told him I was taking my kids camping but didn't know where to go, he said Indiana Dunes and then told me about the best hidden beaches there. It has become one of our favorite places! These are just a few ways that his thoughtfulness was illustrated. He was so responsive and helpful at work, too. I wish I could turn back time and tell you how grateful I am for you, Tim. May you rest in peace, friend, and may your memory be eternal.

Tim was such a joy to work with. He was always so eager to help and could solve any problem in a matter of minutes! We shared a love of the outdoors, travel, and our dogs and I enjoyed our lengthy chats about those topics. He is deeply missed. Sending love and comfort to his family and friends at this difficult time.

I want to extend my condolences to Tim's family and friends. Tim was a great help to me at Illinois State where I taught history. My calls or emails were invariably met with a quick response and competent assistance. But what I remember more than the help Tim provided was his friendliness, good humor and sense of fun. Tim seemed to enjoy helping people like me were a little older and less tech savvy than most of our colleagues. Within the history department Tim was appreciated as a consummate professional, but more importantly, as a great guy. I am saddened to hear of his passing.

My heart goes out to you during this difficult time. I remember Tim´s fun spirit and laughter in college. I am a better person for knowing him and still occasionally treat myself to the banana with nutella snack he introduced to me. He will not be forgotten. May memories of him bring comfort during this tough time.

To Tim's family,

I am very sorry for your loss. I had the pleasure of working with Tim at ISU. He was smart, funny and always willing to help. I enjoyed talking with him about camping. May you all find your peace with his passing. He will be missed.

I worked with Mr. Tim at heartland headstart and we just became immediate friends. He always had great advise, insight and such a great sense of humor. I started cleaning for him because he only trusted certain people to be around his beloved Baxter. I sure hope him and Baxter are reunited. So sorry to mr and mrs helmuth and family.
Take care

So sorry to hear of Tim´s passing. Most of my happiest memories from high school involve Tim and the adventures we had. Rest easy my friend.
