Timothy Mojonnier Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by DuPage Cremations, Ltd. and Memorial Chapel on May 16, 2023.
Timothy Marchant Mojonnier died peacefully on May 5, 2023 at age 73 after an 8-month battle with cancer, surrounded by his loving family.
Tim was born on September 13, 1949 in Chicago, IL to Helen (née Marchant) and Harry G. Mojonnier, and grew up in Oak Park and River Forest, IL. He graduated in 1971 with a degree in philosophy from Lafayette College in Pennsylvania, where he was active in the student newspaper and campus politics and spent a year studying abroad at the University of Manchester in England.
After college Tim moved back to Chicago, where he started a career in operations management, eventually earning an MBA from the University of Chicago. As an innately curious person and lifelong reader (with philosophy, history, and business as his favorite subjects), Tim developed a love for teaching and served as an adjunct professor of business at a number of universities, including Loyola, DePaul, and Northern Illinois.
Tim had a great passion for travel, taking many trips over the years with his family across North America, Europe, and Latin America. Before any trip, he would take out the longest book he could find on the history of the place, and spend months recounting what he learned at the family dinner table. Shortly before his cancer diagnosis, he and his wife of 38 years, Deborah, fulfilled a lifelong dream by traveling to Egypt and Jordan and visiting the many historical and archeological sites. Tim was also an avid golfer (though he'd be the first to admit his game was uneven), and played tennis when his knees were in better shape. In recent years he also developed a love for swimming, starting most summer mornings with a few laps at the pool.
Tim highly valued his many friendships and was very involved in his local community in River Forest, IL. He also stayed in close touch with many friends from childhood, college, and elsewhere. He was deeply touched by all the people who reached out to support him as he battled cancer, whether it was simply calling or texting with words of encouragement, arranging lunches or coffees, or even flying out from across the country to spend time together.
In addition to his wife, Tim is survived by their children Laura and Gregory, his sister Judy Waggener, and many nieces and nephews. His family will miss him terribly. He is preceded in death by his parents and three sisters (Shirley Stewart, Anabel McDonald, and Pamela Mojonnier). A private memorial is being planned to be held in one of Tim's favorite places in the world -- the garden designed and maintained by his wife. If you wish to make a donation in Tim's memory, please consider the American Cancer Society (https://www.cancer.org/donate/memorial-giving.html).

It has been a horrific year in which I lost my oldest friend with whom we shared innumerable adventures since we were only 4 years old (Tim) and then in January lost my wife to whom I had been married for 51 1/2 years. Our families were each there for one another through these difficult times, but our bereavement continues unabated despite some passage of time. I will never forget Timothy or Joann, and know that Debbie feels the same.

Tim and I first met when we moved across the alley from his home in Oak Park. We were both 4 1/2 years old. I have not had a friend for more than the 69 years that followed during which we went to morning kindergarten class at Whittier School, built snowmen, played basketball and stickball in the alley between our homes, played the board game Risk for endless hours during all-nighters with other friends in Tim's basement, went to Cubs Scouts, attended dance classes, and ultimately blended our families as we attended Cubs games and had theater tickets at Steppenwolf with our wives for years. Our friendship was very strong, as Tim and I were both fond of hosting Whittier school reunions and attending lunches with our many friends from Whittier Grade School and OPRF High School, so Tim and I frequently planned these many events together. We met monthly to celebrate our birthdays, play tennis, and ultimately swim. For years, we made annual journeys to Captiva Island in Florida with Joel Brosk and Paul Magida to swim, play tennis, ride bikes, play golf and drink. Tim was not that much of a drinker, but he excelled in being a good, loyal and reliable friend. There is a hole in my heart as I write this, but his memory and our friendship will remain a blessing until I join him in eternity. My sincerest love and condolences to Tim's surviving family.

Tim was one of my best buddies growing up in OakPark,ILL. Our family moved away before graduating Whittier elementary school. All these years later I have nothing but wonderful memories of Tim. You were a swell guy Tim! God Bless, your friend.
