Timothy Phillips Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Hardesty Funeral Home - Gambrills on Jun. 2, 2025.
Timothy Martin Phillips
Timothy Martin Phillips was born on January 13, 1973 in McKees Rocks, Pennsylvania. The son of Stephen and Maureen (Shea) Phillips, he grew up in Crownsville, Maryland. He graduated from the Severn School in 1991 and matriculated to Bridgton Academy. In 1992 he was appointed to the U.S. Naval Academy. Tim graduated with the Class of 1996, earning a B.S. in English and a commission in the United States Navy. Tim served as a Surface Warfare Officer aboard USS Elliot (DD-967) and USS Chinook (PC-9) and then was an exchange officer with the Royal Netherlands Navy aboard HNLMS Jacob van Heemskerck (F812). He enjoyed living in Alkmaar, Netherlands during this time and welcomed friends and family to visit.
Tim transferred to the Naval Reserves in 2003. He developed a passion for commercial real estate and urban planning that led him to pursue advanced degrees at the University of Maryland, College Park and Kellogg College, Oxford. After graduating from Oxford, Tim was subsequently hired by a UK firm and lived in London from 2014 to 2021.
Tim had a life-long affinity for sailing and seamanship. He earned four "N" letters while at the Naval Academy for Offshore Sailing. In the fleet he was known as an adept shiphandler and earned his Surface Warfare qualification as an ensign. Added to this, Tim was trilingual. As a result, he once translated from Spanish to Dutch and back again between a Spanish pilot and the van Heemskerck commanding officer during a challenging sea and anchor detail.
With such a robust, adventurous life of traveling and living around the world, Tim maintained friendships around the globe. Of all his friends and family, his daughter Maggie is the person he loved the most. Among Tim's fondest memories is when he, Jen, and Maggie sailed around the Greek Islands. It was a paradise-filled summer of sailing, swimming, paddle-boarding, and enjoying majestic views of the Mediterranean.
Tim enjoyed life. He was an avid reader of books and the news. He loved to cook, to tell a story, to write, and to watch Star Wars movies with Maggie.
Tim was predeceased by his father, Stephen Anthony Phillips, by a mere four months.
He is survived by his mother, Maureen (Shea) Phillips, his brother, Stephen, his daughter, Margaret (Maggie), and Jennifer his co-parent.
Tim's memory can be honored with a donation to Boulder Crest Foundation, https://bouldercrest.org/.
