Tim Smith, age 62, was pronounced dead on November 7, 2023, from natural causes after a courageous battle from the effects of alcoholism. Tim is remembered by family and friends for the warmth, laughter, and joy he brought into their lives.
A visitation will be held Sunday, November 26, 2023, from 3:00 to 5:00 PM, at Memorial Services of Iowa (4208 N Ankeny Blvd). A prayer service to follow at 5:00 PM. A funeral mass will be held Monday, November 27, 2023, at 10:30 AM at Our Lady's Immaculate Heart Catholic Church (510 E. 1st Street, Ankeny).
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the A.A. DSM Central Office to honor his memory and support others facing similar struggles.
Tim was born to David and Wanda Smith on July 11, 1961, in Atlantic Iowa. Tim is survived by his mother Wanda, sister Susan Hannam (Ray), brother Phil (Cindy), brother Matt (Jane) and many nieces and nephews. Tim was preceded in death by his father.
Tim grew up in Council Bluffs & Ankeny, Iowa, and graduated from Ankeny High School in 1979. Tim grew up with a passion for sports, excelling in football and baseball during his high school years. After graduating from high school, Tim received an associate degree from DMACC and pursued a career in the gaming industry, where he found his niche as a dedicated casino manager. Known for his sharp mind and strategic thinking, he navigated the complexities of the industry with skill and precision. His colleagues fondly remember his leadership and camaraderie.
Outside of the casino, Tim found solace and joy on the golf course. Golf became not only a pastime, but a true passion. His love for the game was infectious, and he leaves behind fond memories of rounds played and shared laughter with friends.
In addition to his love for sports and gaming, Tim had a special companion in his loyal dog, George. The bond they shared provided Tim comfort and companionship during both the highs and lows of life.
Tim will be remembered for the love and loyalty he showed to his family, friends, and dog. His kindness, generosity, and sense of humor endeared him to those who knew him best. While alcoholism took its toll, it cannot overshadow the cherished moments of joy and connections he brought into the lives of others. A special thanks goes out to all those who help fight addictions, especially the staff at Powell Chemical Dependency Center. Also, we can't thank enough all his friends who helped him on his journey.
May Tim find peace and may those who mourn his passing find comfort in the memories of the laughter, shared victories, and love that defined his time with us.

It is so odd that it has been exactly one year. I was at a job fair yesterday and met someone who had known Tim as well. We chatted for some time about what a great craps teacher he was. Living on in others, Tim.

Tim was my first supervisor I. The casino business. He was a great guy and a lot of fun to be around. Sorry to his family and friends, a great loss for sure.

Tim was truly a joy to be around. Working with him at Riverside Casino was a pleasure. I learned a lot from him. RIP my friend.
