John Herbert Dyer III, 54, passed away on Thursday, October 16, 2025, at his home in Cannelton, IN.
John was born in Harrison County on April 21,1971, the son of the late John Herbert Dyer II and the late Elanor (Stroud) Lewis. From his parents he received the nickname "Toby" at a young age, a nickname to which many came to know him by.
Through his youth, Toby enjoyed being outside, something he carried with him until the end. He spent summers of his youth biking to and from Patoka to spend the day at the lake with close friends and helping his dad in any way that he could. His mother taught him the art of cinnamon rolls, something that he was able to pass down to both of his children.
As the years went on, he met the love of his life, Jamie Hammers, and they quickly fell for one another. Their first kiss came on October 16th, 1997, and their last on October 16th, 2025. They married June 20th, 1998, in Bristow, Indiana, surrounded by friends and family.
At his time of passing, Toby worked at Corn Island Shipyard, frequently dubbed, "The Island", where he took part in building barges for numerous companies. This was something he was truly passionate about. His family recalls the numerous barge launches that they attended through the years, and the great pride they felt in watching something he was a part of take voyage.
In Toby's free time, he enjoyed many things, especially activities that took place in nature. In the milder months, Toby enjoyed hiking with his family at Patoka and Lincoln, and in the summers, he enjoyed night fishing with his good friend, Bryan Jarboe. As well as with his wife Jamie Dyer at Saddle Lake. When winter came, he rejoiced in deer-hunting with his son, Cameron Dyer, and through the summer, helping at the farm with his father-in-law James Hammers. He looked forward to spending time with his grandchildren, Ava Dyer and Tobi Dyer as often as he could. The two children looked up to him greatly and admired their papaw. With his daughter, Kacey Dyer, Toby cherished Saturday coffee trips and driving around listening to music or talking about life. He was a great husband, dad, papaw, brother, and friend to all that knew him.
Toby was a jack of all trades; there were few things he couldn't fix. He was ever willing to lend a helping hand, even If he wasn't sure how to solve the problem at first. He came up with solutions most wouldn't consider. His son, daughter, and wife considered him to be a superhero in all cases. He was selfless in every sense of the word, and an honorable man whom many looked up to.
Toby will be greatly missed by all who knew him. His infectious smile, and sympathetic disposition made him easy to talk to and even easier to love. He was a shoulder to cry on, and could make anybody laugh, even in the most difficult of times.
Surviving is his wife of 27 years, Jamie Dyer; his children, Cameron Dyer and Kacey Dyer (Tristan Howard); sisters, Pam Foree and Kimberly Miles; and his beloved grandchildren, Ava and Tobi Dyer.
In addition to his parents, Toby was preceded in death by a daughter, Courtney Byrd and brother, Jack Dyer.
Funeral Services will be held at 6:00 p.m. on Monday, October 20th, 2025, at Zoercher-Gillick Funeral Home. Pastor David Hayes will officiate. Visitation will be from 4:00pm to 6:00pm.
Memorial contributions may be made to River's Edge Animal Shelter.
