Todd Black Obituary

Visit the White Pine Funeral Services - Logan website to view the full obituary.

Todd Adamson Black, 59, passed away peacefully at his home in Nibley, Utah, on September 12, 2025. Todd was born January 1, 1966, in Monticello, Utah. He was the New Year’s Baby for the whole state. Todd grew up in Blanding, where he developed a lifelong love for the outdoors.

Todd was the beloved son of Claudia and Lewis Black. He was also the devoted husband of Pat, and a proud father to Houston and Rees, Porter, Mariah and Luke and Taylor. He was a caring brother to Tracy (Todd), Craig (Kristine), Adam (Brittney), Travis (Davi), and Darlene (Nate). His family was the center of his life, especially his seven grandchildren, Orsen, Leland, Jens, Aiden, Camille, Connor and August. It didn’t matter if he ended up soaking wet, covered in silly string, setting off fireworks, or with mud on his shoes; Todd was always in the middle of the chaos, and often the one who started it. Always building treasures for them in his shop, and taking them for rides on the 4-wheeler. His playful spirit and willingness to dive into adventure made him the kind of grandpa everyone hopes to have.

After graduating from San Juan High School, Todd served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Nova Scotia, Canada. There he deepened his faith and learned the importance of the gospel of Jesus Christ. After Todd’s mission, he married Pat Shumway. They were sealed in the Manti temple. They moved to Provo, UT where Todd earned his bachelor's degree from BYU in Conservation Biology. He then moved his little family to Cache Valley where he earned a master’s degree in Geographical Informational Systems (GIS), from Utah State University. This was a perfect fit for someone whose heart belonged to nature.

Todd worked for USU, Deseret Land and Livestock, and as a Wildlife Biologist and Open Land Manager for Eagle Mountain City. These jobs were more than just work, they were a calling. He loved elk, mule deer, and could identify almost any bird by its song. His work with sage grouse became a hallmark of his dedication. He shared his knowledge generously, appearing in publications and on local news, always eager to teach others about the beauty and importance of wildlife. His passion for learning never waned; he was forever curious about the world around him.

Although Todd moved away from his small home town, he was always able to find a connection to San Juan County with those he met. He had a talent for recognizing those on his path, whether that was at a random gas station in Utah or out in the fields of the Midwest.

Above all, Todd was a steadfast disciple of Jesus Christ. His strength, kindness, and willingness to serve were reflections of his faith. Todd will be missed by many. He loved his family and loved the hunt! He is off to better hunting grounds, and just in time for the start of the season.

Family and friends are invited to celebrate Todd’s life.  A funeral service for Todd will be held on Saturday, September 20, 2025, at 12:00 noon at the Nibley West Stake Center, 1584 W 3200 S, Nibley, Utah. A viewing will be held prior to the service from 10:00 to 11:30 am. An additional viewing will be held on Friday, September 19, 2025, from 6:00–8:00 pm also at the Nibley West Stake Center.
