Todd William MacGillivray "Todd Mack", 57, founder of Foursided Framing, Cards, Gifts, and Art, passed away in his home in Chicago after a life-long battle with chronic and progressive diseases on January 7, 2025.
"Founder - Shop Guy - Sells Cool Old & New Things - Picture Framer - Mess Maker" Todd Mack's Instagram Profile.
Born in Detroit and raised in Sterling Heights, Michigan, Todd graduated from Sterling Heights High School and attended Macomb Community College and Eastern Michigan University. Todd was incredibly creative from a young age, having taken adult classes at Birmingham Bloomfield Art Center and Mount Clemens Art Center while still in high school. He was the founder of Todd Mack Designs picture framing gallery and 'Ganza gift shop, in East Lansing's Old Town neighborhood.
In October of 2000, Todd met his future husband Gino Pinto in Ohio. They dated long-distance until he moved to Chicago to be with Gino and start their life together in December of 2001. He opened his first Foursided location on Broadway in Lakeview in 2002. Todd and Gino now operate five locations, with forty employees.
From 2004 to 2012, Todd served on the board of the Lakeview East Chamber of Commerce, including a term as President from 2009 to 2010. Todd was always thinking about how to make the neighborhood he worked and live in better-how to support local businesses, improve commercial districts, and create opportunities for others to succeed.
Todd had been a brittle Type 1 Diabetic and had Addison's Disease for over thirty-five years, which came with all-consuming struggles. He was working on becoming sober, which was very hard on his body. Todd lived every day as it was given to him, and he embraced them fully. He had a big heart, especially for those who also faced life difficulties. Todd never passed by a person struggling on the street without stopping to give them money or food. He was actively involved in alcohol recovery programs and helped others achieve sobriety through being a dedicated sponsor.
Todd's passion was antiquing, wherever he went from Michigan to California, where they also lived for two years. He collected all things vintage and many things in nature. He never saw a Petoskey stone or a lichen or moss-filled branch that he did not need to add to his collection. He saw beauty, often in dusty and broken objects. Todd had a keen eye for antiques, as well as natural wonders. He was also an avid lover of dogs and cats, so much so that he made sure that each Foursided store over the last 20 years had dog treats out front, every day, to provide a warm welcome to all.
Todd had an adventurous spirit, having camped all over the United States with his family when he was younger, and over their 25 years together, Todd and Gino, traveled the world with friends and family. Favorite trips include Alaska with his parents and grandmother, Australia, the Caribbean many times, Hawaii, Italy, Spain, Greece, Yosemite, and last year, Iceland. He especially loved to snorkel in the ocean on these trips.
Todd was a creator of unique art. He inspired others with his original collage artwork and framing. People would often say, "Holy smokes, how'd he do that?!" He also encouraged and mentored other artists both formally and informally with support and advice to help them get started. He held many art openings with art of all types and backgrounds. Todd worked to ensure that his art was accessible and affordable for all and that the products in his stores reflected small makers.
There were also multiple projects and creative activities happening at once and in process at his stores and in his home. He lived and breathed art, while also not taking himself or his art too seriously, exhibited by injecting humor and light heartedness into his art work. Todd was witty, which you could see in his art and his sense of humor, as well in his relationships. He could always make others laugh, especially his mother, in the toughest times.
