Thomas “Sam” Franklin Bass, 77, passed away on December 17, 2025. He was born on March 24, 1948, in Waterloo, Iowa, to Lira Bell Gowin.
Sam proudly served his country in the United States Navy from 1967 until his retirement in 1989. Following his military service, he carried with him the values of dedication, loyalty, and integrity that defined his life.
He attended Jesup High School in Jesup, Iowa, and later earned a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Northwood University.
On May 9, 1969, Sam married the love of his life, Peggy Jean Perkins, and together they built a life centered on family, friendship, and love. Sam enjoyed woodworking, spending time with his pets, and making friends wherever he went. He was known for his kindness, easy conversation, and willingness to lend a helping hand.
Sam was preceded in death by his mother, Lira Bell Froit; his twin brother, Theodore Bass; and his sister, Patricia Froit.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Peggy Bass; his daughter, Samantha Briles; his son, Matthew Bass; and his cherished grandchildren, Abigail Briles, Ethan Bass, and Kameron Briles. He is also survived by his sisters, Nellie Durand, Myrtle Domschot, Candice Kowatzki, and Yvon Smith, and his brother, Roger Froit, along with many extended family members and friends who will miss him dearly.
A Visitation for Sam will be held on Saturday, December 27, 2025, from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m., followed by a Funeral Service from 2:00 to 3:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital.
Sam’s legacy of service, love for family, and genuine kindness will live on in all who knew him.
