Tommy Joe “Tom” Lear
March 3, 1939 – February 10, 2026
Tommy Joe (Tom) Lear, 86, passed away on February 10, 2026, and is now at peace in the presence of his Savior. He was born on March 3, 1939, in Goodland, Kansas, to Lucien C. Lear and Mabel Broyles Lear. His early years were spent in Kansas and Illinois before his family settled in Madisonville, Texas, where he graduated from Madisonville High School.
After high school, Tom proudly joined the United States Navy. While stationed in Dallas, he met the love of his life, Mickie Anne White. Their marriage began a lifelong partnership marked by devotion, laughter, and deep love. After retiring from active duty, Tom began a second career with AT&T, where he worked faithfully until his retirement. He also continued serving for many years in the Naval Reserve, traveling to Europe, Japan, and Vietnam during his time in the reserves, retiring at the rank of Master Chief Petty Officer.
Tom was a man who made everyone feel welcome. Warm, friendly, and genuinely kind, he loved big and laughed often. He had a playful, mischievous sense of humor and a gift for making ordinary moments memorable.
His heart for service shaped much of his life. Tom was deeply involved in the Boy Scouts of America, serving for many years as a Scoutmaster and in other leadership roles. He was honored with the Silver Beaver Award in recognition of his distinguished service to youth. He believed deeply in mentoring and encouraging young men, and he gave generously of his time and steady guidance.
Tom also remained active in his Masonic Lodge for many years. The principles of service, character, and brotherhood were not just ideals to him—they were reflected in the way he lived each day. He was active as well in various veterans organizations and cherished the camaraderie of those communities.
If there was anything that captured Tom’s heart almost as much as his family, it was flying. A private pilot, he loved spending time in the sky in his Piper Cub, drawn to the freedom and wonder of flight. He also had a deep appreciation for car shows, enjoying not only the craftsmanship and detail of the vehicles, but the stories and people behind them.
Tom and Mickie made their home in Kaufman, Texas. Tom is survived by kids, Ted (Karen) Lear, Chris (Shiloh) Lear, Barry Lear, and Wendy Lear. He was a proud grandfather and great-grandfather to many and treasured the time spent with his family.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mickie; his son, Danny; and his brother, Don. While hearts are heavy, there is comfort in knowing he is reunited with those he loved dearly.
Tom lived life to the fullest. He was deeply loved and will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
