Tommy Nelson Weaver known by his family as “the prince among men,” left a life well-lived and loved on July 15, 2024. He was born to Mozelle and Adolphus Weaver on October 5, 1943, in Lubbock, Texas. He attended Roosevelt High School where he was involved in sports and Texas Tech University until he enlisted in the army in 1966. When he completed OCS he served as a TAC Officer from 1967-68. He was deployed to Korea during the USS Pueblo Incident.
Upon returning to Lubbock after his service, Tommy graduated from Texas Tech with a degree in business and used that degree to start Weaver Business Systems. Later, Tommy and his friend Joe Magee opened Austin’s first private postal boxes. When he returned to Lubbock later in life, he acquired and managed a Pepperidge Farm franchise.
There was really no distinction between Tommy’s business and personal friends, and that’s how Shirley Ann Worde entered his life. Mutual friends introduced them and a year later, they were married on April 7, 1979. Their lives together were filled with laughter and so many unbelievably funny events. Tommy always had “hilarious one-liners” supported by his great sense of comic timing!
When Shirley married Tommy, all her friends told her that she was “lucky, lucky, lucky!”…which proved to be true. He was a man of great humor, integrity, warmth, and generosity. He was, quite simply, the best man Shirley ever knew. He will be missed by so many people who knew him.
He lived a big life with a great love for his family, friends, Texas Tech Red Raiders, golf, and travel, especially to Yellowstone National Park. His wardrobe mainly consisted of golf shirts and hats …lots of hats, with TTU or YNP emblems. He absolutely loved playing golf but the best part of the game was the friendships he made. Travel was always on Tommy’s agenda and this led him to YNP where he lived and worked during four summer seasons. After this time, he and Shirley returned in the summers for 2 weeks and in the winter for snowmobiling. The beauty and vastness of YNP had a profound impact on Tommy that lasted the rest of his life.
Tommy is survived by Shirley Worde Weaver, his wife and best friend of 45 years, and family who adored him on both sides of the Weaver/Worde families.
His Celebration of Life will be held on September 10, 2024, at 3:00 p.m., at Canyon Methodist Church, 217 FM Road 1729, Lubbock, Texas.
