Mr. Tony Chagolla, age 72, of Shannon, North Carolina, transitioned to his Heavenly Home on Monday, August 19, 2024, at UNC Hospital at Chapel Hill, surrounded by just a handful of his loved ones during his sudden passing. But before we get to that, here is a little bit about my dad, "Mr. Tony."
Mr. Tony was an only child, and this led him to become a man that would welcome anyone in his big heart and in his home. In the beginning of creating his Blessed Family, he met Delphane in 1968, and in January of 1973, Delphane and Ruby decided to make a getaway (via a house window) with Tony and Caleb and marry the love of their lives and began the journey of creating his family. In his younger years, he loved the sport of basketball, which we honor today with members of his team as honorary pallbearers. He had aspirations of going to medical school, but God had other plans for him. He retired from Dupont as a plastics technician. We are proud to say He was a man of God and loved all things cars and golf in his earlier years and all things gardening in his later years. He prized his 1967 Candy Apple Red Chevelle. Throughout the years, he spent many hours trying to bring new life into this classic car. He always enjoyed an opportunity to display his labor of love. When his mother fell ill, he showed this same love by taking care of her. As he grew older, gardening became a passion, and, needless to say, every flower bed at the Chagolla residence is now part of His Garden. In this garden, he spent countless hours making it what he wanted. With the help of some special friends, he would use the fruits of his labor to provide the freshest fruits and veggies for his family. Dad proved to us he could grow anything and was beyond proud of his work. He was funny, intelligent, creative, unique, a lover of music and golf, and most of all, a wonderful husband, Dad, and Grandpa!
He was born in Riverside, California, to the late Mrs. Novellia Bullard Chagolla Hall and Mr. John Chagolla on May 9, 1952.
Grieving his passing are his beloved wife, Delphane Locklear Chagolla; his son, Mr. Johnny Chagolla, and wife, Mrs. Jacqueline Chagolla; his oldest daughter, Mrs. Janet Chagolla Scott, and husband, Mr. Stanley Scott; his baby girl, Dr. Toni Chagolla Oxendine, and husband, Mr. Ian Oxendine. Tony cherished his grandchildren. He has 4 grandsons and 2 granddaughters: Triston, Tyler, Nicholas, Josiah, Kayley, and Elora. He was blessed to have a host of family and special friends, with special mention to Gloria Oxendine, who grieved his passing and will continue to cherish his love and memories. His daughter Janet and grandson Tyler were always there whenever Daddy needed anything, and we appreciate all they have done. Well Done!
Mr. Tony was greeted in the afterlife by his mother, father, and stepdad Martin Hall; his baby boy, Michael Antonio Chagolla; his granddaughter, Ma'kayela Audreyonna Chagolla; and lastly, one of his closest friends and an "Honorary Chagolla," Edward "Slim" Strickland.
There was never a dull moment with Daddy, or as most of you knew him, "Mr. Tony"! He kept us on our toes and always had something going. To know him was to love him, and he will be missed dearly!
