Averill Anthony "Tony" English

Averill Anthony English, affectionately known as Tony, passed away on July 25, 2025, at the age of 80.

Tony was born on February 21, 1945, and grew up in Winnetka, Illinois, where he graduated from New Trier High School. As an adult, he made his home in Glenview, where he lived for many years.

Tony proudly served as a police officer in Northfield, Illinois, where he dedicated his career to protecting and serving the community with honor and integrity. He was respected for his unwavering commitment to doing what was right.

Beyond his service, Tony was an avid snowmobiler, known for his adventurous spirit and love of the outdoors. He especially enjoyed snowmobile trips with close friends to northern Wisconsin, where many of his fondest memories were made. He always enjoyed life in the company of others. Whenever he traveled, he seemed to run into people he knew, as his circle of friends was extensive.

Tony was preceded by his father, the Hon. Robert E. English, and his mother, Harriet Tilden English. He is survived by his loving sisters, Suzanne English Jones and Brigid English Hawlitzky (Steve); his nephews, Tony Jones and Chris Jones (Annette); his nieces, Angie Lilly (Steve) and Jennifer Bellantuono; and his great-nieces and great-nephews, Matthew, Megan, Robert, and Emily Lilly. He was a devoted brother, uncle, and great-uncle who will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.

A private burial will be held.

The family would like to thank all who have extended their condolences and invites you to honor Tony's memory in your own way.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the American Lung Association at lung.org in Tony's name.
