Travis Wade Berrett Wednesday, July 9, 1997 – Sunday, Sep 14, 2025 Aurora, Colorado
Travis came into our lives on Wednesday, July 9, 1997. Outside our home, Travis was timid and shy. But inside, he was adorable, vibrant and full of life. His best friend throughout his life was his brother Tyler, who was two years older. Until Tyler started middle school, the two were inseparable.
Travis loved trucks, trains, airplanes and buses. He only went to school so he could ride the school bus. Although his I.Q. was high, he was diagnosed with Aspergers early on and had a difficult time focusing on his teachers' instructions. Travis had many wonderful Cherry Creek School District teachers throughout his 12 years of school, but his favorite, who assisted him all the way through high school graduation, was Mr. Joe Bruley.
Travis's favorite subjects were Geography and Politics. Travis couldn't wait to do 23 and Me to learn where his ancestors came from. Because of this, Travis traveled to Iceland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Germany, to name a few. Travis could tell you the capital and type of government of every country in the world. And of course, he knew the capital and history of every state in the U.S. and travelled to just about all of them.
In his 20's, mental illness was gaining more advantage over Travis. Off medication he had a personality exactly opposite. Off medication he was strong, invincible, and not afraid of anything or anyone. But off medication he was also paranoid and schizophrenic. Getting Travis to take medication and stay on medication was a battle we ultimately lost and which claimed his life on Sunday, September 14, 2025.
Travis loved the outdoors. He wasn't much for meetings or large crowds. He continuously stated he wanted to live in a cabin in the tops of the mountains and live off the land. For these reasons, we will scatter his ashes in the mountains on his birthday next year in lieu of holding a formal memorial service-which he wouldn't want.
Some of us have longer journeys; some of us have shorter ones. Travis's journey was a shorter one. There are no easy answers or solutions for mental illness. Cherry Creek School District and every counselor Travis ever had was patient, loving, kind and amazing. There is no magic pill for mental illness. In lieu of flowers or donations, we request extra love and understanding toward our fellow men and neighbor-our neighbor across the street, and our neighbor across the ocean.
Travis is survived by his father Sheldon Berrett, his mother Connie Richards, his brother Tyler (Cathleen) Berrett, his sister Savanna (Danny) Priest, his stepfather Christian Tauscher, his niece Adilyn, his nephew Owen, his niece Camryn, his grandfather Golden Berrett, and many wonderful aunts, uncles and cousins.
We loved Travis very much. Our greatest wish was for him to be happy. He will be deeply missed.
