Travis was a life-long resident of
Anniston, Alabama, the oldest child and son of Reuben and Maybelle Doss Higgins. He punched his ticket to Heaven on November 11th, after a long illness and extended stay at RMC Hospital in Anniston.
Preceding Travis in death are his parents, Reuben and Maybelle Doss Higgins; his beloved wife of 65 years, Geraldine Phillips Higgins; his younger brother, Elbert Preston Higgins; his youngest son, Tommy Randall Higgins; and his sister-in-law, Ethelene Phillips Calhoun.
Those left to cherish the memory of Travis include his precious sister and special brother-in-law, Jeanette and Kerry Kilgore; his brother-in-law, Tommy Calhoun; his two sons, Tracy Elbert Higgins (Ann) and Tony Nathan Higgins; his grandchildren, Kinley Higgins, Landon Higgins (Nicole), Tonya Higgins Simpson (Colton), and Trey Higgins (Alli); great-grandchildren, Michael, Nicholas, and Anastasia; and a host of extended family members and friends.
Travis met the love of his life, Geraldine Phillips, soon after graduating from Oxford High School. They were married in the summer of 1957, just a couple of days after his 20th birthday, by his grandfather, Rev. John L. Doss, Sr. In that same year, their first son was born, proceeding with the birth of two more sons. To provide for his family, Travis became a meat-cutter at Kroger, sold insurance for National Life, built tires for Goodyear Tire & Rubber in Gadsden, then finally happily retired in the summer of 1999. His wife, Gerry, retired three years later, and they enjoyed taking short trips together, playing cards, and joining the Keenagers at Wellington Baptist Church.
Travis was a true outdoorsman. In his younger years, he thoroughly enjoyed walking in the woods with a dog, hunting rabbits, and squirrels, or just enjoying the beauty of nature with his family. He loved collecting, trading, shooting, tinkering, and talking about firearms, and was an excellent marksman with a long gun and pistol. In his senior years, he enjoyed listening to his collection of classic country music albums, cheering for the Crimson Tide, and watching the birds and other critters from his home on the hill on Cave Road.
Travis was a generous man friends and family could rely on. He was quick with a joke and loved to laugh and poke fun. He had a firm handshake and expected you to challenge his grip. He loved sharing his memories and stories with his family and was never hesitant to tell you he loved you. He was the patriarch of the family, and his legacy will live on with his descendants.
We will miss you, Paw-Paw Travis.
