Troy D. Gates, Sr., 89, resident of Ripley, passed away Sunday, June 25, 2023, at his home surrounded by his family.
Funeral Service honoring the life of Mr. Gates will be 11 am Thursday, June 29, 2023, in the Heritage Chapel of The Ripley Funeral Home with Bro. Doc Shelton officiating. Visitation will be 5 pm until 8 pm, Wednesday, June 28, 2023, at The Ripley Funeral Home. Burial will be in Tippah Memorial Gardens.
The last of six children, Mr. Gates was born October 4, 1933, in Tippah County to the late Alford Gates and Nellie Mae Roberson Armstrong (Joe). He started working at a young age and never feared to get his hands dirty. He drove a truck for Oil Dri Corporation for 30 years and was married to his beloved wife, Ethel Abels, for 56 years, before she passed on October 29, 2012. After retirement, he continued to piddle with junk cars and care for cattle.
Mr. Gates was an easy-going man who believed in good Christian values. He worked hard, helped others, and enjoyed the simple ways of life. Mr. Gates enjoyed being on his farm, sharing time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren, and playing with his little dog, Bengie. He will truly be missed by all those who knew and loved him.
Those left to cherish memories include one daughter, Joan Mullins, four grandchildren, Keith Allen Mullins, Alisha James, Brandon Gates, and John Butler, sixteen great grandchildren, and his canine companion, Bengie.
In addition to his wife and parents, his is also preceded in death by, one daughter, Patty Gates, one son, Dewayne Gates, one sister, Audry Fry, and four brothers, Clifton, Truman, Harvel, and Euliss Gates.
