Vallance DeVisser Obituary

Vallance E. (Val) DeVisser

Utica, NY

In the early morning hours of Friday August 18, 2023, Vallance E. DeVisser, 86, departed this life for Glory following the words of St. Paul, "For me to live is Christ, to die is gain." (Phil. 1:21)

Val was born in Rome, NY, the only son of Eugene and Marion (Collins) DeVisser. Val spent his younger years in Rome. He graduated from Rome Free Academy, and the University of Rochester. Val completed his education at Colgate University earning a Master's Degree in guidance counseling. His life's work was spent in public education beginning with teaching at Staley Junior High School. After which, he started working in guidance at BOCES, then as a high school guidance counselor at South Lewis Central School. He concluded his career at Adirondack Central School until his retirement, after over thirty years of serving the interests of his students.

Val was serving his country in the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves when he met and married the love of his life, Sandra Zitko. Their devoted marriage spanned sixty-one years.

Val is survived by his wife, their daughter, Michelle DeVisser, and their grandchildren, Erica LaLone Gainey and Tyler (Haley) LaLone, and great grandsons, Bryson Gainey and Levi LaLone. Also surviving are his sister Marilyn's children, Lauren (Bernard) Owens and Eric (Patricia) Wightman, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Mr. DeVisser was my first guidance counselor when I returned to Westmoreland Central School in the eighth grade. I remember how he inspired me to do my best and how he always encouraged me when I felt "a little less than." RIP Mr. DeVisser.
