William Boafo Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Metropolitan Funeral Chapels, Inc. on Feb. 7, 2026.
William Kwabena Boafo was born February 2, 1945, in Nkonya Tepo, Ghana, West Africa. He was born to Minister Emmanuel Stephen Mensah and Rosina Akua Ampomah, the eighth of their eleven children. Since his father was a minister, William and his siblings were raised with a strong Christian belief system, and he

continued to study his faith into adulthood.

William attended the University of Ghana in Accra, Ghana, from 1965 to 1967, earning a degree in Economics with a minor in Sociology. From 1967 to 1968, he served as the Minister of Economic Affairs in Ghana, where he formulated government policy to advance viable economic development strategies. In August of 1968, William Boafo came to Rochester, New York, to study at the University of Rochester, where he earned a Master of Arts in Economics in May of 1970. While studying at the University of Rochester, William met the love of his life, Johnnie M. Wright. In 1970, the couple entered into holy matrimony. William served as a

loving and devoted husband for 53 years until Johnnie's earthly departure in 2023.

William was employed with the Monroe County Youth Bureau as an auditor from 1971 to 1972, prior to entering law school at the University of Toronto School of Law, where he earned his Juris Doctorate in 1975 and was admitted to practice in 1977. William

served as a Senior Legal Assistant for Monroe County from 1976 to 1978, during which he researched legal matters and supported staff attorneys. He served as supervisor of the Child Support Enforcement Unit attorneys from 1978 to 1986, during which he was responsible for litigating paternity and child support matters. Beginning in 1986, William Boafo served as a Juvenile Prosecutor for the Monroe County Law Department, and in 1999, he was promoted to supervisor of the Juvenile Prosecutor's Office. He prosecuted juvenile delinquents and worked closely with police, probation officers, and judges regarding juvenile cases. He retired on December 31, 2003, from the Monroe County Law Department.

After his retirement, William maintained a limited law practice while devoting his attention to the love of his life, Johnnie. Although

William and Johnnie never had children, they encouraged and supported many of their family members and friends in their educational and professional endeavors. William also sponsored many of his family members to begin new lives in the United States of America.

Having departed this life on January 20, 2026, exactly two years to the date Johnnie was buried, William leaves to cherish his memory: two brothers, Wilberforce Boafo (Christable Akuamoah-Boafo) and Kwadwo "Benjamin" Boateng; two sisters, Elizabeth Adjivon, of Rochester, NY and Alice Boafo, of Ghana, West Africa; and many other relatives and friends.
