On Wednesday, January 28, 2026, Vander Garrison Burnette transitioned peacefully from his earthly life into eternal rest. He was born in Washington, DC, to the late Jack Vander Burnette and Ruby Constantia Riggs.
Vander, affectionately known as Van or “Bruh,” was educated in the District of Columbia Public School System. He attended Merritt Elementary School, Woodson Junior High School, and Spingarn High School, where he studied carpentry. After completing his education, he began working with several construction companies throughout the DC area, building a career rooted in skill, dedication, and hard work.
In 1983, Van began his service with the U.S. Department of Justice, where he worked faithfully until his retirement in 2023. His years of service reflected his steady character and strong work ethic. Van was also known for his love of dancing and his ability to make others laugh. He never held his tongue and was always ready to share his thoughts, good or bad, offering them honestly and straight from the heart.
Van had a deep appreciation for antique cars and enjoyed the simple pleasure of the open road. He was always ready for a spontaneous drive, often turning those moments into road trips to his favorite casinos. These adventures brought him happiness and stories he enjoyed sharing.
Vander leaves to cherish his memory widow, Cynthia; his children, Nikiya and Ian (and Kayla); his grandchildren, Naiylah, Nigel, and Nadia; his sister, Edna Burnette; and a host of extended family and friends who will miss him dearly. He was welcomed into eternal rest by his parents, Jack and Ruby, and his brothers, Alphonso and Lester.
