Vasilios "Billy" Kanavas

Vasilios "Billy" Kanavas, Lefkopigi-native and resident of Chelmsford, MA for over 40 years, passed away peacefully Wednesday, July 31, 2024 holding the hands of loved ones.
Billy was the beloved Son of the late Konstantinos & Paraskevi Kanavas, Uncle to his adoring nieces and nephews, Loving Brother of 6 and friend to many, if not all he encountered.
At the age of 14, Billy moved to the United States with his parents, his sister Tasa, and his brother Pantelis, settling in Lowell, MA while his three older siblings, Stella, Vaia, and Taki, remained in Greece.
He lived in Chelmsford with his now late brother Pantelis, Sister-in-law and dear friend, Tasoula Kanavas and was the best live-in uncle his four nieces could've ever dreamed of having while growing up.
After graduating Lowell High School, Billy was a dedicated waiter with nearly four decades of experience. He spent most of his career at Lowell's Speare House, followed by The Colonial Inn in Concord, MA. Billy found great joy in his work, cherishing the opportunity to meet and build lasting connections with co-workers, customers and all whom he met.
Billy's true passions were his family and friends, his love for Greece, its culture, and especially its music. You'd always find a Greek song playing in the background, often after he carefully selected a CD from his center console and inserted it into his CD player, or while he whistled the tune of his favorite Volanis song. If he wasn't taking his nieces for a joy ride to One Stop Market or visiting the alternating "favorite theia" or "favorite theio," you could be sure to find him walking laps around the Boulevard, or better yet, when life permitted, the Platano in his hometown village of Lefkopigi, Kozani.
Billy cherished his morning coffee meet-ups with friends at the Kafenio, also known as Market Basket's Cafe, and enjoyed frequent trips to Kohl's in search of the perfect Champion crew-neck. He also loved catching up with friends over the phone. His unwavering optimism, calm demeanor, and quick-witted one-liners never went unnoticed and will forever dwell in the hearts of those who were lucky enough to know him.
Billy is survived by his brother, Demetri "Taki" Kanavas of Lowell, MA, his sister Tasa Ermilios & brother in law, Arthur Ermilios in Athens, Greece, sister in law Tasoula Kanavas, brother in law Michael Veroulis and brother in law Niko Gavanas in Galatista, Greece and his many cousins, nieces, nephews, and beloved friends throughout the US and Greece.
He was predeceased by his sisters Vaia Veroulis and Stella Gavana, his brother Peter Kanavas, and sister-in-law Nikki Kanavas.
Visiting hours will be held on Thursday, August 8, 2024, from 9:00 AM – 10:00 AM at the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 62 Lewis St., Lowell. His Funeral Service will follow the visitation in church at 10 AM. Interment will follow at Westlawn II Cemetery, Lowell. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, 62 Lewis St., Lowell, MA 01854.
