Vaughn V. Crisp, a beloved member of the Balsam community and a devoted family man, passed away peacefully on November 4, 2025, at the Elizabeth House after an extended illness. He was 89 years old. Born on March 14, 1936, in Balsam, North Carolina, to the late Lonnie and Lucy Smith Crisp, Vaughn was a true embodiment of kindness and love, with a spirit that touched everyone around him.
Vaughn’s life was characterized by hard work and dedication, especially during his remarkable 24-year tenure in the Maintenance Department at Harris Regional Hospital. His meticulous attention to detail and unwavering commitment to service made a significant impact on both his colleagues and the many lives he encountered daily.
A proud veteran, Vaughn enlisted in the Navy as an aviation structural mechanic, serving honorably in the Air Antisubmarine Squadron 22. His military service was a profound source of pride and accomplishment, reflecting his dedication not only to his country but also his community.
Content in the beauty of nature and the joys of working with his hands, Vaughn loved working in his vegetable garden just to give the crop to friends and family. Vaughn treasured family gatherings, especially fishing trips, finding true happiness in the company of his loved ones.
Vaughn’s laughter was infectious, and his presence brought comfort to many. He cherished the time spent with daughters Pamela Crisp Gutridge (Scott) and Wendy Crisp-Ashe (Dennis) was a proud grandfather to Lacey, Jessica (Elijah), and Sara, as well as a doting great-grandfather to Alexa. Vaughn is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and many friends who will remember him fondly for his kind heart and loving spirit.
In addition to his parents, Vaughn is preceded in death by his beloved wife, Alva Jean Phillips Crisp who he lost in 2004, and is reunited in spirit with his nine siblings and infant son, Jeffrey.
A Funeral Service will be held in Vaughn's honor on Wednesday, November 12, 2025, at 2:00 PM, at Balsam Missionary Baptist Church in Sylva, North Carolina. Pastors: Lee Brooks, Greg Cullen, and David Crisp will be officiating. The family will receive friends an hour before the service at the church. Following the service, Vaughn will be laid to rest in the cemetery located at the same church location, in a final farewell that will honor his enduring legacy.
As we remember Vaughn Crisp, we hold onto the memories of his laughter and kindness, recognizing the profound impact he had on our lives. His spirit will remain with us, comforting us as we navigate the days ahead without him.
