Vela Irene Walter

Vela Irene Walter, of Nicholasville, Kentucky, passed away peacefully at home, just weeks after celebrating her 85th birthday. She was a devoted wife, sister, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother whose life was defined by kindness, compassion, and service to others.

Vela was born in Wilmore, Kentucky on August 29, 1940. At the age of ten, she began caring for the elderly in her community, including Mrs. Boulder who moved into in her childhood home. Vela took care of Miss Boulder every day when she got home from school. This early compassion grew into a lifelong calling to help others, always placing their needs above her own.

She is survived by her husband, James "Cricket" Walter; her daughter, Vickie; her son, Greg; granddaughters, Ashley, Danielle, and Mia; great-granddaughters, Harmony and Serenity; and her siblings, Tommye and Bill. She was preceded in death by her siblings Ralph, Minnie, Donald, Mary Bell, and Charles.

She will be remembered for her selflessness, her gentle spirit, and the unconditional love she gave to her family, friends, and neighbors. Her legacy will continue to live on in the many lives she touched.

A graveside service will take place at Camp Nelson Cemetery on Tuesday, September 30 at 2:30 p.m., followed by a Celebration of Life memorial gathering at her home from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that acts of kindness be shared in her honor.
