Velma Hinds, the oldest person in Missouri and sixth oldest in the United States at age 112, of Macon, MO, passed away Thursday, June 8, 2023 at the Samaritan Memorial Hospital in Macon, MO.
Velma was born on October 22, 1910 in Webb City, MO, the daughter of Frank O. and Cora I. (Weaver) Woods. She was united in marriage to William Louis Hinds Jr. on February 2, 1934 in Miami, Oklahoma. Velma was a member of the Church of God Holiness of Macon and helped teach Sunday school throughout the years. She first started working at the Miami hotel as an elevator operator and then was promoted to a server. She then worked various jobs including housekeeping, a matron at a girl's dorm in Mt. Zion and Kirksville, MO and a seamstress at factories, including making Danny Dare and Debbie Dare children jackets in Mission, Kansas. Velma was a wonderful seamstress and often made beautiful dresses and attire for special occasions. She enjoyed reading, sewing, baking pies, and caring and entertaining for her family, especially her grandchildren.
She is survived by her two children, Clarenda Sue Cavender of Elmer, MO and Cayrol Jean Coffman of Macon, MO; grandchildren, William Kent Cavender (Donita), Curtis Reed Cavender (Carrie), Susan Jean Van Keirsbilck (Dave), Kyle Lane Cavender, Martha Raylene Freeman, Marsha Jean Blevins (Gary), Chad Ryon Coffman, and Chris Regan Coffman (Rachel); 13 great-grandchildren, 8 great-great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews; and other extended family members.
Velma is preceded in death by her parents; husband William in February 22, 1959; twin granddaughters, Jill and Jan Cavender; grandson, Wyatt Coffman; sons-in-law, Clifford Coffman and Rene Cavender; grandson-in-law, Richard Freeman; and 13 siblings.
Funeral services will be 11 am, on Thursday, June 15, 2023 at the Church of God Holiness of Macon (Address: 514 Covey Rise Lane, Macon, MO 63552) with Pastor Brandon Speaks and Pastor Ralph Wheeler officiating. A visitation will precede the service starting at 10 am at the church. Burial will be held the following day, Friday, June 16, 2023 at 11 am in the G.A.R Cemetery in Miami, OK. Memorials may be made to the Church of God Holiness of Macon.
