Verna Scott Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Woodlawn Funeral Home - Mount Holly on Jul. 19, 2022.
Verna Ida Brewster Scott, 95, of Dallas, a devout woman of God, transitioned to her heavenly home on July 17th, at home surrounded by family. She was born October 6, 1926 in Vivian, WV. She was the eldest daughter of the late Carl and Bertha Lockhart Brewster.
Verna worked as a seamstress in various factories throughout her life. She sewed many beautiful quilts for her family. She was a devoted wife, mother, sister, daughter, grandmother and friend. She loved working in her many gardens. She loved flowers and especially her beautiful rose bushes. Verna and Carles, her husband of 69 years, could be found at the fish camp every Saturday night. She loved hosting family, cooking for everyone and gathering outside by the infamous Scott family swing. So many memories, laughs, tears and celebrations have happened by that swing.
She was the pillar of our family. She created a safe space for all that seeked refuge in her care. She prayed for all of those in need of God's love and comfort. She was known for her delicious home cooking, biscuits & gravy from scratch (her family's favorite) and all the many pies and cakes she would make for anyone that would request them.
Verna was a founding member of Dallas Church of God and loved her church family so very much. There was nothing she would not do for anyone from her church. She was a mother to all that loved her, devoted her life to God, her congregation and supporting the widows of the church.
She is survived by two daughters: Patricia and Martha Scott of Dallas, NC; sisters: Buelah Scott of Mt. Holly and Sara Bell of Dallas, NC, seven grandchildren: Robert Meltz (Angel) of Valencia, CA, Wendy Krueger of FL, Loren Grugan of Rensselaer, NY, Nicole Marr of Venice, FL, Heather Grugan of Albany, NY, Tracey Tracy of Tucson, AZ, and Jada (Daniel and Meyer) Criswell of Belmont, NC. She has ten great-grandchildren, and four great great-grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Carles Scott who died in December 2014, her daughter Frances Jane Grugan, son James Edgar Scott, brothers Ezra, Dennis and Everett Brewster, sisters Luella Cottle, Mary Belle LeGrand and Betty Lester.
Friends and family will be received on Thursday, July 21st from 12:30-2:00 at Dallas Church of God, 311 S. College Street, Dallas where a memorial service will begin at 2:00 pm. Verna will be laid to rest next to her husband Carles, at Hillcrest Cemetery, following the service.

Sister Scott will be so missed. She was a wonderful friend to my Mama, Eula Mae Jernigan. She put together gift baskets for people who were sick or were shut-ins; always doing things to help and uplift others. Rest in the fact she is in heaven and will never have another pain or endure another heartache.
