Verna Jean Woods, a beacon of resilience and joy, passed away peacefully on September 29, 2025, in Jonesboro, AR, at the age of 83. Born on October 9, 1941, in Phoenix, AZ, to the late Vernon Lloyd and Mary Drewcella (Boyd) Dortch, Verna's life was a testament to the power of positivity and the strength of the human spirit.
Verna's journey began in the warmth of the Arizona sun. She and her family later moved to Rector where she spent her formative years contributing to her family's business, Dortch's Supermarket, as a diligent grocery clerk. Her early work instilled in her a robust work ethic and a love for community that would shine throughout her life. Despite the challenge of blindness, Verna's indomitable spirit saw her forge a path of service and companionship at The Blind Organization. There, she not only found a way to contribute meaningfully to society but also made countless friends who were inspired by her tenacity and warmth.
Family was the cornerstone of Verna's life. She was a cherished mother to her son, Brian Lee, and his wife, Stephanie Paige Woods of Jonesboro. Her legacy of love and laughter lives on through her grandchildren, Taylor Madison Cornelious of Killeen, Texas, and Brittany Nicole Jones of Conway, as well as her great-grandchildren, Olivia Warnick, Owen Warnick, and Gray Alex-Zandr Cornelious, who will forever remember her vibrant spirit and unyielding support.
Verna was the beloved sister of Christa Lee Dortch Sanderson of Jonesboro, with whom she shared an unbreakable bond and countless cherished memories. She was preceded in death by her sister, Shirley Ann Dortch Patton, and her brother: Charles Leslie Dortch. She is also survived by her nephew: James Randall Dalton of Lunsford, TN
A woman of many interests, Verna's zest for life was contagious. She relished the opportunity to socialize, often hosting get-togethers with her sister that became the highlight of many friends' and family members' social calendars. Her love for dance and exercise kept her active and engaged, embodying her belief that movement and joy were essential ingredients to a fulfilling life.
Verna's resilience was legendary. She faced life's adversities with a steadfast determination and an unwavering belief that every challenge was an opportunity to grow stronger. Her ability to get back up, time and again, served as an inspiration to all who were fortunate enough to know her.
