Obituary published on Legacy.com by Perry Funeral Home - Newark on Oct. 8, 2025.
Vernal A. McNeil was born April 19, 1957 in
Newark, New Jersey to the proud parents Allie McNeil Sr. and Elizabeth Marie Smith. He entered into his eternal rest on September 24, 2025. He completed his education in Newark, and graduated from Central High School in June 1976. Soon thereafter, he enlisted into the military United States Army. The majority of his service took place overseas where he then met and married, now divorced, Phyllis Lee. Through their union, he was blessed with two beautiful daughters, Crystal Spivey and Tiffany McNeil. Sadly, Vernal was preceded in death by the loss of another daughter, Altawan Latresha Robinson. However, as a living reflection of their love, Vernal's legacy and honor will continue on its journey through his daughters and from whom he was blessed with 8 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
Vernal was preceded in death by our father, Allie McNeil Sr., and our dearly beloved mother, Elizabeth Marie Smith. In addition, we continue to hold close in hearts the memories of our beloved brothers: Vance Smith, Derrick Smith, Kenneth McNeil, and Allie "Chubby" McNeil Jr., and most recently, the loss of our dear sister, Ingrid A. Smith. To carry on the legacy, we have our elder brother, Henry "Hank" McNeil, Merrick Smith, Kelly McNeil, Brian A. McNeil & wife, Karen McNeil, Mark R. McNeil, Wendell A. McNeil, Kirk E. McNeil, Eric McNeil, and sister, Allison McNeil. The extension of the family includes a multitude of loving nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews as well.
Vernal proudly enlisted into the military service of the United States Army, December 1976 and was discharged December 1987 demonstrating courage, loyalty, and unwavering dedication to duty. Vernal was awarded the honorary title as E-6 Staff Sergeant, a non-commissioned officer (NCO). He was last stationed at Hanau, Germany before returning to the United States and resided in Texas for almost 25 years. His exemplary showmanship, tactical knowledge and analysis, skills training, weaponry, command and control (C2), granted him the position as tank commander, M-1 tank with a 4-man crew, and a platoon sergeant in charge of 23 soldiers, along with other various duties. Upon his discharge from the Army and his return to the U.S., Vernal continued his work career in the field of National Law Enforcement and Security. He also did small electrical jobs, worked as an underground pipe layer lineman assistant, and machine operator. Throughout the remaining course of his life, Vernal continued to demonstrate order, self-control, and tight discipline. He held great pride in his appearance, presentation, and independence.
In 2009 on the 12th day of May in the state of Texas, Vernal was initiated and inducted as a member of the St. James Lodge Number #074 International F. & A. M. Masons and Order of Eastern Stars SUPREME KING SOLOMON and Patrons' Council. Again, another fine example of his leadership of excellence. Our dear brother will be greatly missed, but never forgotten.
