It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Vernon L. Ledbetter, who left us peacefully on October 11, 2025, at the age of 80. Cremation has taken place under the direction of Webb & Rodrick Chapel and Crematory. Memorial graveside service will be held at 10 AM, Thursday, November 6, 2025, at Mount Hope Cemetery in Independence, Kansas.
Born on September 21, 1945, in Independence, Kansas, to Eldon JC Ledbetter and Betty "Hase" Ledbetter.
Vernon graduated from Independence High School and didn't waste any time pursuing his passion for driving. He headed to Joplin, Missouri, where he earned his CDL license and began a long career as a truck driver for CFI. His love for the open road was matched only by his enthusiasm for the great outdoors. During his time off, you could find him fishing, woodworking, or hunting. In fact, one Christmas, his family gifted him a deer calendar in hopes he would finally get a glimpse of a deer in person.
He was also a member of the Southern Baptist Church.
Vernon leaves behind his daughter, Deanna Mitchell, and son-in-law, Ed Mitchell. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Justin Holler and Daniel Mitchell, as well as his sisters Judy Lawrence and Gerry Bryant, along with brother-in-law Alvin Bryant.
Vernon was preceded in death by his beloved wife Melanie Ledbetter, father Eldon Ledbetter, mother Betty Ledbetter, and son Jon Ledbetter.
