Vernon Carl Swisher, of Kingmont Community, passed away on Monday, April 07, 2025, at his home. He was born in Fairmont on October 05, 1955, a son of the late Vernon Gerald and Geraldine Elizabeth Garland Swisher.
He was preceded in death by his wife Linda Ann Sturm Swisher on January 11, 2017. She was the love of his life, and they were married 40 years. He was also preceded in death by two brothers James and Albert Swisher.
He is survived by one brother Wilford Swisher and his wife Ruth of Connecticut; a sister-in-law Jeanette Swisher; a cousin Mark Murphy; his God son who he thought of as a grandson Tyler Crawford and his wife Olivia and close friends Bill and Carole Crawford.
Vern was the (First District) WV AFL-CIO Vice-President in 2008-2018 and elected to the Executive Board in 2009. He has been a member of United Steelworkers Local 1 since May 1978 and worked at Novelis Aluminum in Fairmont, WV. During his time with USW Local 1 he held many positions including Grievance Committeeman, Negotiating Committeeman, Trustee, Treasurer and served two terms as President of USW Local 1. Vern worked for the USWs Legislative and Political office in Washington DC as part of the USWs intern program in 1997. Vern served two terms on the USWs District 8 Wage and Policy Committee. He served as USW Local 1 Legislative and Political Chairman. Vern was elected President of the Marion County AFL-CIO in 1993 and served for 20 years before stepping down in 2013. Prior to his appointment as Vice-President, Vern served on the WV AFL-CIO Advisory Board. Politically active, Vern served in various capacities since Labor 1996, eventually serving as WV AFL-CIO zone coordinator in 2004. Vern was appointed as WV state coordinator for the USWs Labor 2008 campaign.Active in his local community, Vern was First Vice Chair of the Marion County Democrat Executive Committee and is served as Vice President of the Marion County Democrat Mens Club. He has also served as President of the Marion County 911 Advisory Board.
Friends may call at Carpenter and Ford Funeral Home, 209 Merchant Street, on Friday, April 11, 2025, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. A burial service will be held on Saturday, April 12, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at Mt. Zion Cemetery.
