Veronica V. Blake was born on December 31st, 1940, in Brooklyn, New York, to the late Carolyn Hattie Thomas and McKinley Joseph Matherson. Veronica was the youngest of five children.
Veronica attended P.S. 304 through junior high before entering Eastern District where she completed her high school studies. She went on to graduate from Medgar Evers College with an associate degree in education. Veronica became a paraprofessional for public school 304 and then a New York City caseworker. From there, Veronica went on to become Director of Volunteers at Horton Memorial Hospital.
In her spare time, Veronica loved to cook and sew. She was a loving, caring, and compassionate person, who loved her family and friends. Even though Veronica loved animals, in particular dogs, she also adopted a family of cats and deer that she would feed daily from her back porch.
Veronica was proceeded in death by her husband Robert Blake, and three brothers, Cliff, Maxwell, and Milton. Veronica leaves to mourn her son Jamie Blake, along with three grandchildren, Jamie, Robert, and James in addition to six great-grandchildren, Amara, James III, Leilani, Marlon, Nala, and Rya. One sister, Carolyn Page, one brother Malvin Matherson, two sister-in-law's, Eunice Matherson and Donella Matherson and host of nieces and nephews. The Homegoing Celebration will be held for Veronica at Martinez-Morse Funeral Home on Friday, October 6th from 12PM to 2PM. A Graveside Service will follow at Wallkill Cemetery at 2:30PM. There will be no Repass.
