Today, we come together to honor the life of Vertye Bell Watts Caples, a remarkable woman whose light touched the hearts of all who knew her. Born on September 14, 1940, to the late Hezekiah and Mary Watts of Columbia, MS, Vertye was the third child of twelve. From her early days, it was evident that Vertye possessed a rare combination of intellect, grace, and kindness.
Growing up in Columbia, MS, Vertye distinguished herself as a bright student with a love for reading, graduating as Valedictorian from La Marion High School. Her thirst for knowledge led her to pursue higher education, culminating in a Bachelor's degree from Alcorn State University, Lorman, MS and a Master of Education from William Carey College in
Hattiesburg, MS. She continued her academic pursuits with postgraduate studies at the University of Southern Mississippi, Long Beach, MS.
Vertye's faith played a central role in her life, and she confessed her faith at an early age. She was an active participant in church activities and often lent her angelic voice to the choir.
After college, Vertye embarked on a fulfilling career in education. For over 40 years, she dedicated herself to the students of the Gulfport School District, instilling in them a love for learning and a belief in their own potential. Her passion for teaching was recognized with nominations for Teacher of the Year. She also served as a member of several educational organizations.
In 1971, Vertye found love and companionship in Malcolm Caples.Together they built a life centered around faith, family, and community. Vertye was blessed with one child, Roderick Caples and a bonus son, Kevin Mason. As devoted members of St. John Baptist Church in Gulfport for over 50 years, Vertye and Malcolm enriched the congregation with their presence and contributions. Vertye's operatic voice often graced the choir.
