Victoria Herrera Dominguez (Gonzales), a loving mother, grandmother, and sister, completed her earthly journey on the evening of January 25, 2025. She was born on November 17, 1934, in southeast Travis County, Texas. She is the youngest of the girls and the fifth surviving child of Jose and Trinidad Herrera.
She remembers living on the Erickson Farm property in Del Valle, Texas where her father was a sharecropper. The Erickson Farm was her first employer. In addition to working in Texas, her father also went to St. Louis Missouri and worked on the railroad.
After saving some money he returned to Mexico and went into business for himself operating a store. The venture did not work out and he returned to central Texas and the Erickson Farm, this time he brought his family and was here to stay. Victoria said she lived on the Erickson property until she was five or six years old. She recalls moving to a location on FR973 in Del Valle, Texas and going to Dry Creek School.
Child labor was common in those days and most of the Herrera children did not advance beyond the sixth or seventh grade. Victoria remembers picking cotton even before attending the first grade. She would join the family in the cotton field and use a fabric flour sack her mother had made. When her sack was filled her dad would empty the contents into his sack. In 1946, when Victoria was twelve, the family moved to the Thrasher Lane location in
Austin, Texas. Victoria attended Colorado School and ended her education after completing the sixth grade. During this time, the family did migrant work in west Texas part of the year.
At the age of twenty, in 1954, Victoria got her first job outside of agricultural work. She worked at a commercial laundry and remained employed there for three years. Victorias work career consisted of many years in the retail industry. She worked for sixteen years in the meat departments for HEB and Mini Mart. She also worked in general for WoolCo and Solo Serve. She especially enjoyed working with her sister Maria at WoolCo. She retired in 1996.
In 1957, Victoria married Salome (Sam) Dominguez, II. She met Sam at the Avalon Club, a popular nightclub in north Austin. Sam had recently been discharged from the US Army, where he served in West Germany. Sam and Victoria had three children during their marriage. Sam and Victoria were married for twenty-six years until Sams death in 1983. During their marriage, Sam and Victoria lived in Round Rock, Jollyville and Austin.
In 1986, Victoria married Benito Gonzales from Houston, Texas. Ben and Victoria have been married 39 years.
