Virgil Strandlien Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Cease Family Funeral Home - Bemidji on Feb. 24, 2026.
Virgil LeRoy Strandlien, 90, passed away February 21, 2026, at his daughter Cindy (Duane) Hayes' home in Solway, surrounded by his family. Words cannot express the thanks for all the loving care he received at their home.

Funeral services will be held at the Solway Lutheran Church in Solway, Minnesota, on Saturday, February 28th, 2026, at 2:00 pm. A visitation will take place one hour prior to the services at the church.

Virgil was born to Emil and Mabel (Sather) Strandlien on October 4, 1935, at a midwife's home in Shevlin, Minnesota. He attended school in Shevlin through the eighth grade, at which time he got rheumatic fever. He continued his education through life experiences and enjoyed reading the encyclopedias from A to Z.

He married Arlis Ann Petersen on May 1, 1954. In 1958, they made their home in Solway, where they raised their five children.

He worked various trucking jobs, including hauling iron ore in the Iron Range, and was employed at Wally's Oil Company and Thorson Construction. Virgil was also the co-owner of Strandlien Grocery and continued farming into his 80s. He took great pride in owning and working the family century farm.

He will be greatly missed by his wife-Arlis of Solway, Minnesota; his children-Cindy (Duane) Hayes of Solway, Minnesota, Pam Jacobson of Solway, Minnesota, Sandy (Joel) Steffen of Bemidji, Minnesota, and Gregg Strandlien of Solway, Minnesota; 11 grandchildren, 29 great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his daughter-Kathy Nibbe, his parents; and siblings, Lawrence Strandlien, Ethel Saign, and Hazel Roff; son-in-law, David Jacobson, and grandson-in-law, John Seitz.

His hobbies included deer hunting, farming, snowmobiling, watching Westerns, documentaries, and playing cards. He had a love for his family. He cherished the time that he spent with his grandchildren. Many thanks and appreciation for the loving care and support given to the entire family from St. Croix Hospice.
