Dr. Virgil Tirmonia, 95, of Canton, fell asleep in The Lord, after a long illness on September 3rd, 2025. Born in Canton, Ohio on October 3rd, 1929 to the late John and Cornelia Tirmonia.
Dr. Tirmonia’s life began in Canton, but he spent most of his youth in Romania. He returned to Canton in 1947 and graduated from McKinley High School in 1948. He then received a Bachelor of Science from Kent State University in 1952, and a Doctorate in Medicine from The Ohio State University in 1956. His next step to begin his over 40 year history in medicine was his internship at Akron City Hospital. He proudly enlisted in the U.S. Navy and sailed the Pacific Ocean overseeing all medical care for two years on the U.S.S. Merrick. He returned to Ohio beginning his residency and fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic between 1959 and 1963. Back in Canton in 1963, he founded his own hospital and office practice in Internal Medicine until his retirement in 1997. His patients loved him for his brilliance in medical knowledge and his compassionate and mentoring personality. He served as department chair in Internal Medicine at Mercy Hospital and vice-chair for Regional Alumni Affairs in Ohio at the Cleveland Clinic. His True love was his family. He began his family in 1966, marrying his love Eugenia â€sGenicaâ€t Lazar, and having three wonderful and accomplished children. He was a devoted grandfather â€sMosuâ€t to all six of his accomplished and successful grandchildren. He loved attending all his children and grandchildren’s sporting events near and far. They all knew him lovingly as â€sMosuâ€t. He is survived by his dear wife of 59 years Eugenia â€sGenicaâ€t; his children Dr. Michael (Allison) Tirmonia, Victoria (Joseph) Chaffin, and Elizabeth (George) Teodorescu; and his grandchildren Brendan, Jackson, Pierce, Gabrielle, Olivia, and Noah. Dr. Tirmonia was devoted and passionate about his Romanian Orthodox Faith and was a member of the local Romanian Orthodox Church for greater than seventy years. He shared his singing talents during services as a choir member and cantor. Calling hours will be held from 2PM until 5PM on Sunday, September 7th in the St. George Romanian Orthodox Church, 144 30th St NW, Canton, OH 44709, where a Vesper Prayer Service will be held from 2PM until 2:30PM. Additional calling hours will be held at 10AM on Monday, September 8th, also in the Church. Funeral services will follow in the Church at 11AM with Very Rev. Fr. Remus Grama officiating. Burial will take place in Forest Hill Cemetery in Canton. A dinner in Dr. Tirmonia's honor will be held at the church following burial.
The family requests any memorial donations to be made to St. George Romanian Orthodox Church of Canton.
