Stephen Scott "Scotty" Carnes, age 77, passed away surrounded by family on August 13, 2025, in his hometown of Canton, Ohio.

Born on December 13, 1947, in Canton, Scotty was the beloved son of the late William and Evelyn Carnes. He was also preceded in death by his sister Marlene (Carnes) Watkins and brother-in-law Richard Watkins.

Scotty is survived by his devoted wife, Terri (Swingle) Carnes; daughters Stherrim (Matt) Raymond and Leah (Trevor) Barnes; and stepchildren Phillip and Shannon Cooley. He also leaves behind his loving sisters Bonnie (Fred) Millard, and Elaine (Michael) Held.

A proud grandfather, he is survived by grandchildren Nicholas and Andrew Raymond, and Triston (Bailey), Seth, and Adelynn Barnes-each of whom brought joy to his life.

Scotty honorably served in the United States Air Force from 1967 to 1971 as a Sergeant in the 762nd Air Defense Group, stationed in Cape Cod, Massachusetts, and in Korea. His time in the service was a source of great pride throughout his life.

A standout athlete at McKinley High School, Scotty was a swimmer and a star catcher on his high school baseball team and was scouted by major league teams. Though military service called him away before he could pursue that path, his love of the game never faded.

Scotty spent much of his career working for Superior Meats before retiring from Ashland Oil. He was a dedicated worker and a steadfast friend to many in both roles. Not willing to fully retire, Scotty started his own business creating custom golf clubs.

A true outdoorsman, Scotty found peace and joy in hunting, fishing, and golfing with his buddies. Whether in the woods, on the water, or on the fairway, he felt most at home surrounded by nature.

A celebration of Scotty's life will be held at Rose Hill Memorial Gardens, 3655 Wales Avenue NW, Massillon, Ohio, on Friday, August 22, 2025. Calling hours will take place in the cemetery chapel from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m., followed by a graveside service with full military honors. Services will be led by Pastor Anthony Mayle of Canton Freewill Baptist Church beginning at 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Veterans of Foreign Wars (www.vfw.org).

Scotty's legacy of sport, laughter, and loyalty will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.

Finally, one of Scotty's favorite things to do in his final years was to send Bible verses to family and friends daily. We are honored to share one final verse with everyone who knew him, in his honor.

1 John 4:7-8

"Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love."

Scott and I played Mighty Mite baseball on the hallowed ground that was Shanafelt field many years ago. We have been friends for nearly 70 years. He could always be counted upon for both pronounced memory and infinite laughter. I hope that the many good memories I have of him will also exist within both family and friend in this time of sorrow. He will be missed.

I am so sorry to hear of Scotty passing. I had known Scotty since we were 5 years old. I lost contact when we both entered the military after high school. He was always a great guy and passion for baseball. He taught me how to throw a curveball. I will miss him.

So sorry to hear that Scotty has passed. I never met Scotty just talked to him every week. I was his WGT golf buddy. We had many virtual rounds of golf together bantering back and forth. He taught me many things about our virtual golf and also about real golf as I am still fortunate enough to swing a real golf club.
Rest in peace my friend we will miss you.
Our condolences to the family from his golf partners Christine Scott and Robert Munro. WGT handles Northernpainter and Beaverbob0
