Virginia Gray Obituary

The family of Virginia W. Gray sadly announces her passing. Early in the morning of 14 October, she passed away peacefully at her home at the age of eighty-four, lovingly cared for by her husband, surrounded by the two dogs she adored, who brought her so much comfort and joy. Virginia as preceded in death by her parents, Virginia and Robert Whaley; brothers, Robbie and Dalton Whaley; and her daughter, Lisa Whaley.
Born in Morehead City, North Carolina, Virginia followed her dreams to Norfolk, where she built a beautiful life filled with love, laughter, and friendship. She was a cherished friend to many. Virginia's gentle heart, cheerful laugh, and warm spirit brightened every life she touched. She made each person with whom she talked feel as though that they were the most important person in the world.
During her life, Virginia was an excellent businesswoman driven to be constantly busy and productive. She worked for Virginia National Bank, was a realtor, a model, and the owner and manager of two restaurants – one in Portsmouth, one in Norfolk. Whatever Virginia decided to do, she excelled, be the task professional, social, or familial.
Her family relationships were some of her greatest success. She loved her family in North Carolina and also loved her family in Norfolk. Virginia was a kind and loving wife to her husband of more than sixty years, Jim. She was a devoted and loving mother to her daughter, Lisa who sadly predeceased her. We take great comfort in knowing mother and daughter are reunited, along with their beloved dogs, Taffy, Bow, and Lil Bit.
She will be greatly missed by all who were lucky enough to know her.
In lieu of flowers the family ask that donations be made to the Children's Hospital of the Kings Daughters in Virginia's memory.
The family will receive friends at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Tidewater Drive Chapel on Wednesday, 29 October 2025, from 1-2pm. A service will take place at 2pm, immediately after the visitation. Condolences may be offered at www.hollomon-brown.com

i had the great honor to know Virginia since she came from North Carolina to Norfolk where she met and married Jim Gray. She has always been as kind to me as she was beautiful, and she extended that same kindness to my children. i have loved her as both a friend and a sister and know this is a terrible loss for her dear husband, Jim, who has my greatest sympathy. She will be deeply missed by all of her family members and those of us fortunate enough to have known her.
