Virginia Marvel Mickelson, affectionately known as "Ginny," graced the world with her presence on February 18, 1930, in Pelican Rapids, Minnesota. Born to Alfred and Gertrude (Helle) Mickelson, she spent her formative years in her cherished hometown, where she excelled academically and socially, graduating from Pelican Rapids High School in 1949. During this pivotal time, her commitment to caring for others blossomed as she worked at Pelican Rapids Hospital, a testament to her nurturing spirit.
On June 5, 1949, Ginny united in marriage with Curtis Hahn at the Ringsaker Church in Pelican Rapids. Their love story began humbly in a basement apartment in Moorhead, Minnesota. Together, they built a life filled with joy and laughter, welcoming three wonderful children: Greg, Marie, and Steven. Tragically, Ginny faced the sudden loss of her beloved Curtis in 1977, but she rose to the occasion with steadfast resilience, embodying the strength of a remarkable mother.
With an unwavering dedication to her family and community, Ginny began working at JC Penney in downtown Fargo before she embarked on what would become a lifelong career at St. Luke’s Hospital (later known as MeritCare and Sanford). Starting in the Emergency Department and earning her EMT certification, she later transitioned to the Physical Therapy department, where she devoted 43 years of service. Ginny retired at the venerable age of 90, only bowing to the challenges posed by the pandemic.
A devoted member of the First Congregational Church in Moorhead, Ginny poured her heart into teaching Sunday School and organizing crafts for the annual Bazaars. Her vibrant spirit shone brightly in her involvement with the Bridge players group, where laughter and camaraderie thrived. Renowned for her sewing skills, she crafted nearly all her daughters’ clothing, demonstrating not only her creativity but also her commitment to family traditions. Dubbed the "lefse queen," Ginny took immense joy in passing down the cherished tradition of lefse-making to future generations.
Above all, Ginny treasured the moments spent at her lake home, where she welcomed family and friends with open arms, fostering connections that would last a lifetime. Virginia Marvel Hahn leaves behind a rich legacy, interwoven with love, laughter, and a profound influence on all who had the privilege of knowing her.
She will be dearly missed but fondly remembered by all whose lives she touched. She is survived by two children: Marie (Jeff) Welna of Charlotte, NC, and Steve (Cathy) Hahn of Park Rapids; seven grandchildren: Gregory (Kari) Hahn, Eric (Monica) Hahn, Elena Hahn, Lynne (Chris) Olson, Stephen (Sarah) Welna, Joshua (Megan) Hahn, Alyssa (Brenton) Berdahl; great grandchildren: Aden Hahn, Leo Hahn, Colin Welna, Charlotte Olson, Lachlan Olson, Kayla Welna, Ryan Welna, Lauren Welna, Tosten Hahn, Ramsey Hahn, Jack Welna, Hadley Berdahl, Charlie Berdahl, and Brielle Berdahl; one brother, Earl Mickelson of Dent, MN; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Curtis Hahn; son, Gregory Hahn; and siblings: Mayer, Howard, Lawrence, Palmer, Orlando, Walter, Ervin, Josephine, Lorraine, Herbert, and Adolph.
