Virginia Merrill Jones Lowe

Virginia Merrill (Jones) Lowe, 95, passed from this life on Monday, September 23, 2024, at St. Claire Medical Center in Morehead, (Rowan County), KY after a brief illness.

She was born on May 29, 1929, in Rowan County, KY and was the eldest child of Walter A. and Rosa M. (McDaniel) Jones. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by two brothers, John Paul Jones and Quenton Kelly Jones as well as two sisters, Hildreth Gay Jones and Clara Iris Moore.

She was also preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Atlee Lowe, whom she married on July 29, 1949, one daughter, Lois Ann Lowe and one granddaughter, Jennifer Purnell Horn.

She is survived by her sister, Thelma Elberta Jones of Morehead, KY and her children: Linda Lou Lowe, David Atlee Lowe (Bonita), Virginia Alice Smith (Fred), Victor Lynn Lowe, and Floyd Allen Lowe (Julie) all of Morehead, KY. She is also survived by six grandchildren: Jesse Lowe, Nicolette (Lowe) Hall, Garrett Lowe, Jeremy Smith, Evan Lowe, and Errick Lowe as well as ten great grandchildren: Rachel Purnell, Allyson Purnell, Abraham Lowe, Coraline Lowe, Clara Lowe, Nathan Smith, Reese Smith, Luna Lowe, Kardi Lowe and Avery Hall.

She worked at Cowden’s Sewing Factory, Gene Case Sewing Factory, MSU Cafeteria, and St. Claire Hospital. She enjoyed sewing clothes for her husband and children, making a wide variety of quilts, studying genealogy, and tending her flowers. She enjoyed traveling with her daughter, Linda Lowe, to various quilt shows and retreats. She was the genealogist and storyteller of the family, often being contacted by people far and wide for details regarding their respective family histories. She will be greatly missed by her family and friends.

A visitation service will be held at the Michael R. Gray Funeral Home in Morehead on Thursday, September 26, 2024, from 5:00 pm to 6:00 pm for family and from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm for the public.

There will be a private burial at Lyons Cemetery at a later date.
