Virginia Brown Powell was born on June 8, 1942, to the late Louise Urquhart and the late Lloyd Turner, Sr. She went to be with the Lord on November 9, 2025.

Virginia was active in civic engagement & community service. She was a co-founder of the first FREE Democratic Daycare in Virginia Beach, VA. She was also a life member of the NAACP, where she was crowned Freedom Fund Queen. She then went on to serve as Freedom Fund Chairman for the Virginia Beach Chapter for several years. Virginia served on the executive board of the NAACP and as youth advisor for the branch.

In 1998, Virginia became a member of the adult auxiliary of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated, the Zeta Amicae. She served as President of the Zeta Amicae of Norfolk, Portsmouth and Chesapeake as well as Vice President of the Zeta Amicae of the Commonwealth of Virginia. Virginia received numerous honors and awards throughout her lifetime for her servant leadership.

She gave her life to Christ at an early age and grew up serving in First Baptist Church in Wakefield, VA. She later joined Ebenezer Baptist Church, Va. Bch., where she served as the Women's Ministry Leader for many years. She served as Pastor's Aide President, as well as a member of the Nurse s Unit and Noon Day Bible Study Ministry. She also sang in the Missionary Gospel Choir. For the last several years she worshipped with the New Life Church Kempsville Family. She attended Norfolk State University and subsequently served as a substitute teacher at Seatack Elementary School. She worked hard to care for her family through various jobs including Manager of "The Groove" Record Shop. She retired as a Quality Control Technician from Mitsubishi Chemical.

She was predeceased by her sisters Evelyn Sumler (Peter), Sarah Rennae Jeters and brothers Glenn Turner, Daniel Smith, James Smith, and Robert Brown. She is survived by her sister Delores "Tintsy" Taylor and her brothers William Dwight Seward, Raymond Turner (Deborah), Willie Turner (Shirley), John Turner (Betty), Lloyd Turner, Jr. and Benjamin Howard. She was the proud mother of the late Oscar Wilder Jr., the late Ilderaye Gwynn (Eric), Lorraine Lee, Dr. Adolph Brown III (Marla) and her daughter & caregivers, Hon. Vivian Henderson with her Son-In-Love H. James Henderson III. Her legacy continues through her 15 grandchildren: Jeton (Aldin), Thomas, Oscar, C.J., Zekia (Daquan), Kyle (Niya), Miranda (Cedrick), Xavier, Jordan, Dana, Aniya, Leah and Special Grandchildren: Clarissa Mack Webb (Hollis), Dr. Adolph Brown IV (Marika) and Sarah Virginia Henderson; 17 great grandchildren: Bryan, Neveah, Jakiyah, Thomas Jr., Jamel, Kamryn, Naushawnna, Kamari, Kaleb, Oscar Jr., Deonya, Paris, Princess, Hazel, Aiden, Arielle, and Jasmine; and 4 great-great grandchildren: Jaceyon, Kairyn, Chosen and A'Laijah. She was the "adoptive mother" of many with a special Goddaughter, Toya J. Gallop. Virginia also had 2 special Sister-Friends: Nancy Hawkins & Rosetta Valentine. She leaves a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, Godchildren, relatives and friends to cherish her memory.
