Cathy Kayser, 70, passed away on November 13, 2025 in Chesapeake, Virginia. Cathy is survived by her husband of 51 years, Scott, her three daughters, Lauren (Tas Haque), Allison (Mike Dubuque), and Colleen (Nick Petro), and her many grandchildren including Amelia, Sigourney, Rowan, Lilly, Bennett, Wren, and Jackson. She is also survived by her mother (Betty Tiller), and her brother Bill Tiller (Kathy). She was preceded in death by her father (Charles "Buddy" Tiller), and her sister (Terry "Jo" Cox).
Cathy was born in LaFollette, Tennessee but grew up in Dayton, Ohio. In 1974 she married her high school sweetheart, and they spent the next 26 years moving all across the country as Scott served in the United States Coast Guard. As the matriarch of a military family, Cathy raised a tight-knit family of five. She made life-long friends at every stop, and built many fond memories along her journey. After 20 years of being a stay-at-home mom, Cathy proudly enrolled in college, and at age 44, graduated with a bachelor's degree in business education from Norfolk State University. A few years later she earned a master's degree in education administration from Old Dominion University. She quickly became a well-loved and influential high school teacher, first for two years at Booker T. Washington High School in Norfolk and then at Hickory High School in Chesapeake until retirement. The impact she had on so many students was beyond measure, and many became friends with her after they graduated.
In retirement, Cathy loved to spend time with her grandkids, travel to country music festivals with one of her best friends, and enjoy time with "The Honeys" (her friends from Hickory High).
Cathy meant so much to so many people. She was loving, accepting, and compassionate, the life of the party, and just a shining light in so many lives. She will be missed dearly by those fortunate enough to call her a friend.
Funeral services will be held at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home located at 524 Cedar Road in Chesapeake, Virginia. A viewing will be held on Sunday, November 23rd from 3:00 PM until 5:00 PM. A second viewing will be held on Monday, November 24th from 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM, followed by a funeral service that will begin at 6:00 PM. Cathy will be interred at the Veteran's cemetery in Suffolk at a later date which is not known at this time.
