Virginia Wickwar Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Greenlawn Funeral Home East on May 6, 2025.
Virginia Lee Wickwar, a beloved matriarch and cherished friend, passed away peacefully on May 4, 2025, in Nixa, Missouri, at the age of 88. Born on November 7, 1936, in Saint Francis, Kansas, Virginia lived a life rich with love, laughter, and community, leaving an indelible mark on all who knew her. Virginia had a love and talent for playing musical instruments and took pride in being valedictorian of her graduating class.
Virginia was united in marriage to James "Jim" Wickwar on September 9, 1956. Together, they built a beautiful life filled with joyful memories and unwavering support for one another. Virginia was the proud mother of four children and joyfully embraced her role as a grandmother and great-grandmother, tirelessly investing her energy and love into their lives. She was a beacon of warmth, embodying the kind of mother that everyone dreams of having.
Her extraordinary talent in the kitchen left friends and family in awe, particularly her renowned pie crusts and cheesecakes made from scratch. Virginia poured her heart into her culinary creations and even compiled a cherished family cookbook that continues to bring comfort and joy.
A gifted seamstress and master crafter, Virginia created not only beautiful garments but also lasting memories during playtime, leading adventures in make-believe that delighted her children and grandchildren alike. She was a passionate and dedicated member of her church community, actively teaching children's Sunday school and Vacation Bible School, where her influence touched many young lives. As a speaker for the women's division of Gideons and a lifelong member, Virginia's commitment to faith and service was unwavering.
Virginia also devoted her time to volunteering with Meals on Wheels, always seeking to uplift others. Her compassionate heart and willingness to support her family during health crises, as well as during the births of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, showcased the depth of her love.
Virginia was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Margaret (McFadden) Mace, and daughter, Jeanie Marie Castellani (Wickwar). She is survived by her husband Jim Wickwar, children: Susan Leslie Bailey (Wickwar), Amy Jo Ketchum (Wickwar), and Phillip James Wickwar along with their spouses, 9 grandchildren, and 3 great grandchildren.
We invite all who were touched by Virginia's life to celebrate her legacy at a visitation on May 9, 2025 from Noon to 2pm, followed by the service at 2pm at Greenlawn Funeral Home East located at 3540 E. Seminole Street, Springfield, MO 65809. Following the service, she will be laid to rest at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, providing a fitting tribute to a life well-lived.
Virginia Lee Wickwar will be profoundly missed but forever remembered for her fierce love, kindness, and the joy she brought to everyone's lives. As we gather to honor her memory, let us carry forward her spirit of generosity, faith, and laughter.

I never had the chance to meet Virginia, but her recipe for Peanut Butter Brownies are still being enjoyed by the Kennedy family, thanks to her sharing with the recipe with my grandma, Connie Shull. Clearly, she was an extremely talented woman. Best wishes for her family!
