Viva Hoxsie Vetter, a longstanding and loved member of the Salem community in Pine Mountain, passed away on Friday, October 24th at 7:45am. She was born July 14th, 1921 in Westbrook, Connecticut to her parents Howard and Edith Hoxsie, and was the eldest of 5 siblings. In her youth, she moved from Connecticut to Pine Mountain, GA where she met and married her husband David Vetter, a survivor of Pearl Harbor, in 1947. Together they had 2 children. Viva's husband sadly passed away in 1962, leaving her widowed with a young son and daughter.
Viva lived most of her life in the LaGrange/Pine Mountain area and was an avid pianist, gardener, reader, crocheter, and had a soft spot for animal rescue-particularly her beloved cats. She worked as a receptionist for Doctor Cowart's office until she retired, after which she took to caring for her precious grandchildren. She played piano for years as well as ran the music program and choir at Salem United Methodist Church. Viva spent her last years at Twin Fountains Nursing Home where she filled her days reading and crocheting blankets and hats for the less fortunate.
Viva has joined her parents, brothers Delton, Theron, and Ronald, her husband David, daughter Deborah, and many other family members and friends who have passed before her. She is survived by her sister Eva, son Theron and his wife Susan, granddaughter Bonnie, grandson David, and her 2 great-grandchildren Joshua and Karsen.
Services will be held at Oak Grove Congregational in Pine Mountain at November 5th at 11am. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking instead to make a donation to the Humane Center of LaGrange in her memory.
