Vivian Lynn "Grandma Frog" Grimes, 66, of Quincy, passed away surrounded by her children on Tuesday, November 4, 2025, in Quincy, IL.
Born May 24, 1959, in San Diego, CA, Vivian was the daughter of Robert and Norma Delores (Poor) Kimbrell Peters. She was married to Winston Courtney on February 12, 1978, and he preceded her in death on February 22, 2023. She was married to Carl Lee Grimes on July 10, 1991, in Quincy, IL and he preceded her in death on August 30, 1994.
Survivors include her five children, Robert Lee Courtney (Jamie), Candice Courtney, Rocky Courtney, Amy Smith (Danny), and Amber Schrand (Joseph); twelve grandchildren, Jordan, Zane, Alyson, Aubree, Khloe, Jade, Zoey, Daniel Jr., Rae'Lynn, Abram, Carlee, and Zaiden; one sister, Judy Rossmiller; her mother in-law, Jeanette Courtney; her cousin, Kirk Peters; and her long time friend, Buddy Chatfield.
Vivian was preceded in death by her husbands; her parents; her brother, Dennis Kimbrell; and her father in-law, Earle Courtney.
Vivian's life was marked by her unwavering dedication and work ethic, which she displayed throughout her career. For 12 years, she served as a cook at O'Shea's, and for another six years, she continued to share her culinary talents at State Street Bar and Grill. Her colleagues and patrons alike will remember her not just for the meals she crafted with care, but for her insistence on doing things the right way, a testament to her strong character and passion for excellence.
Beyond her professional life, Vivian was a woman of many passions. An animal lover through and through, she provided a loving home to a menagerie of pets over the years. Each one, but especially Snoop, Tinker, Tiger, Dottie, Brittany, Gracie, and Sophie, held a special place in her heart. Her green thumb was evident in the lush plants that thrived under her care, often grown from clippings shared by family and friends. Her artistic talents extended further into painting and drawing, often capturing the beauty of the world around her on canvas and paper, sometimes even while enjoying her favorite television shows.
Above all, Vivian's devotion to her family was the cornerstone of her life. The family camping trips to the farm in LaGrange were filled with laughter and love, creating memories that will be treasured forever. Holidays were a special time when Vivian showcased her culinary skills, ensuring that everyone, even unexpected guests, felt welcomed and cared for with her thoughtful meals and extra gift bags.
Her grandchildren, who lovingly called her "Grandma Frog," will hold dear the memory of her visits, always sweetened by the gummy frogs she brought with her. This small, loving gesture was just one of many that illustrated Vivian's nurturing spirit.
Vivian's legacy is one of love, creativity, and generosity. Her big heart knew no bounds, always ready to embrace a new person or pet into her fold. She will be profoundly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her, yet her spirit will continue to inspire us to live with kindness, passion, and an unwavering commitment to those we hold dear.
The family will host a celebration of her life on Sunday, November 9, 2025, from 12:00 pm to 5:00 pm at South Side Boat Club in Quincy, IL.
Friends and Family are invited to Vivian's Life Celebration at a visitation that Tuesday, November 11, 2025, from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm at the O'Donnell-Cookson Life Celebration Home in Quincy.
