Vivian Yvonne Harris was the second eldest of seven children born to the late Rev. George Harris, Sr. and Norma E. Mapp Harris. She was born on May 25, 1953 in Wachapreague, Virginia. "Yvonne," as she was affectionately loved to be called, joined the adoring arms of the Lord on July 4, 2024 at Cypress Point Rehabilitation and Nursing in Virginia Beach, Virginia.
During her early childhood years she was known as "Noogie" to her friends. She attended the public schools of Accomack County on the Eastern Shore of Virginia.
Yvonne acknowledged Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age. She was a faithful member of Snead's Methodist Church Independent, where she sang on the choir, assisted with cooking for church events, as well as maintaining of the maintenance of the church. Yvonne loved to sing alongside her big sister, Shianne and baby sister, Gail. The three became known as the "Harris Sisters."
Yvonne was employed at Perdue Farms until 1981, when her health challenges began with her legs. She was an excellent provider for her only child, Shawn, whom she called "Big Daddy." Even though she only had one biological child, Yvonne gained strong relationships with her son's friends. She often referred to them as her boys.
Yvonne loved her family very much. She loved to cook for them, especially for Harris Day, family reunions, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. She had to ensure her family had her famous meatloaf, macaroni & cheese, and gingerbread. Yvonne would make sure her little brother, "Pee Wee" would get his big slice of gingerbread at family events. You would often see her niece, "Boo Boo" who she referred to as her "road dog," because that was her riding partner.
If you needed a good laugh, Yvonne loved to joke and tell funny stories. She loved having great conversations with her friends, particularly her sister, Shianne. They considered each other as their best friend, more than sisters.
Yvonne was an exceptional caregiver. She provided for both of her parents until their passing.
You never heard her complain, even after her health began to dwindle. If you asked her how she was doing or feeling, she would always tell you "I'm fine."
Yvonne loved to talk about her grandchildren and their accomplishments. She always called for updates about her Lexi, Baby, Mera, and especially Skeeter.
Yvonne was preceded in death by her loving parents, Rev. George Harris, Sr. and Norma Harris; two aunts, Gladys and Emma; four uncles, Alfred, Albert, Johnny, and Billy Mapp; one sister-in-law, Ada Mason Harris; and one great-nephew, Devonta Harris.
She leaves to treasure her adoring memories her loving son, Shawn Lamar Harris (Vanessa); three granddaughters, Alexis LaShawna Press (Ambrose), Mayanna Elise Brickhouse, and Jamera Emmaya Brickhouse-Harris; one grandson, Shawn Lamar Brickhouse; three great-grandchildren, Ta'Quan Lee Bell, Jr., Jayceon Lee Bell, and Brooklyn Skyla Cuffee; one great-aunt, Sarah Stratton; two sisters, Shianne Porter (Charles) and Gail Scarborough (Alfred); four brothers, George Harris, Jr., Otis Harris, Anthony Harris (Anita K), and Dennis Harris (Angela); three special nieces, Zina Harris, Lisa Dickerson, and Claudette Wilmer (James); two special nephews, Tony Harris and Claude Dickerson; four special sons, James Gale, Kevin Neal (Paulene), Jermaine Nock, and Anthony Brickhouse (Marva); six special friends, Sis. Inez Nock (Pastor James Nock), Mary Pinkard, Loretta Dale, Miranda Ames, Tysha Addison-Chambliss, and Larry Ayres; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
Lovingly and sorrowfully submitted,
The Family
