William Elwood Thompson, known as "Elwood" to his friends and family, passed away peacefully in the morning hours on Wednesday, January 7, 2026, at his home surrounded by his family. Elwood was born on December 18, 1934, in Moreland, GA, to the late John William Thompson and Nellie Kate Hunter Thompson.

Elwood was a member of the Civitan Club, Coweta General Hospital Authority Board, Coweta County Zoning Appeals Board, Coweta Fayette EMC Board of Directors for 40 Years, Relyco Board of Directors, Coweta Cattlemen's Association, Deacon and Elder at White Oak ARP Church, and Sunday School teacher.

The funeral service celebrating Elwood's life is Sunday, January 11, 2026, at 2:00 PM at White Oak Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church with Pastor Ronnie Hull officiating. The family will receive friends Saturday evening at McKoon Funeral Home from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM. Elwood will be laid to rest at White Oak ARP Church Cemetery following the service on Sunday, and his grandsons will be serving as pallbearers: Will Smith, Josh Thompson, James Thompson, Casey Cox, Corey Cox, John Thompson, Cody Cox, and Scott Goodson.

Along with his parents, Elwood is preceded in death by his brother, Bobby Hunter Thompson. He is survived by the love of his life of 66 years, Mary Jane Bowers Thompson; children, Donna Smith and her husband Don, Deb Cox, and Richard Thompson and his wife Amy. Elwood is also survived by his grandchildren, Will Smith (Sarah), Josh Thompson (Lauren), Kate Goodson (Scott), James Thompson (Casey), Casey Cox (Brooke), Corey Cox (Maygan), John Thompson (Chloe), Cody Cox (Marybeth); great grandchildren, Gracelynn Cox, Emma Kate Thompson, Jace Thompson, Hunter Thompson, Caroline Cox, Elsie Goodson, Dalton Thompson, Drake Cox, Charlotte Thompson, Brooks Goodson, and Caden Thompson.
