Walter L. Bradley December 27, 1943 – July 2, 2025 It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Walter L. Bradley, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend, who went to be with the Lord peacefully on July 2, 2025, at the age of 81.

Life and Legacy Walter was an internationally recognized Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science at three universities. He had a profound impact on the lives of many-on campus, in the community, and in broader society. Alongside a distinguished professional and service career, Walter prioritized people and was known for his kindness and genuine interest in others, which led to many friendships and mentoring relationships across the United States and around the world.

Walter was born on December 27, 1943, in Dallas and grew up in Corpus Christi, TX. He attended the University of Texas, where he earned both a B.S. and a Ph.D. in Engineering and Materials Science in 1968. While in Austin, he met his wife and lifelong companion, Carol Ann James, to whom he was married for 60 years.

Walter served as a Mechanical Engineering faculty member for over 45 years at the Colorado School of Mines, Texas A&M University, and Baylor University, achieving tenure by the age of 27. He was an internationally recognized professor who pioneered work in metallurgy, composite materials, polymers, and natural composites. Walter advised 41 M.S. theses and 17 Ph.D. dissertations, with his former students making significant contributions at universities and industries across the country.

At the same time, Walter was a leading voice on the connections between faith and science. He spoke at hundreds of universities across the U.S. and coauthored the seminal book The Mystery of Life's Origin, which remains in publication today. He was also one of the founding professors of Campus Crusade for Christ's (CRU) Faculty Commons ministry, pioneering ways for faculty to effectively share their Christian faith on college campuses.

After retiring from Baylor, Walter and Ann relocated to Georgetown, TX, where they continued to speak at conferences and teach in local churches. Walter and Ann were not ones to sit still for long; they traveled extensively and regularly entertained visitors at their home.

Family was at the heart of Walter's life. He took immense pride in his family. Walter dedicated countless hours to supporting their pursuits and celebrating their milestones. Most importantly, he sought to nurture and encourage the faith of his children and grandchildren, guiding them toward a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ through his example, wisdom, and steadfast love. His legacy of faith continues to inspire his family to walk closely with the Lord.

He is survived by his loving wife, Ann; his children, Sharon (David) Perry and Steven (Christy) Bradley; his cherished grandchildren, Rachel (Tylor) Szalony, Daniel (Tessa) Perry, Beth (Austin) Turner, Hudson (Catherine) Bradley, Caroline Bradley, Preston Bradley, and Catherine Bradley; his great-grandchildren, Knox and Palmer Perry; and his sister, Linda Gamble. He was preceded in death by his father, Kenneth; his mother, Virginia; and his brother, Carl.

The memorial service will take place on Saturday, July 26, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. in the chapel at Highland Baptist Church, 2924 Trice Ave, Waco, TX 76707.

Memorials may be made to: Faculty Commons, CRU's faculty ministry Greater Love, an India orphanage and school supported by Walter and Ann Baylor University Student Scholarship (go to "Search Funds" and select "Dr. Walter Bradley Polymer and Materials Science Endowed Fund")

Upon learning of Dr. Walter Bradley crossing over from this life into eternal life with Jesus Christ, I reflected with a bittersweet gratefulness on the occasions that Dr. Bradley personally spoke to hundreds of faculty, students, and laypersons at Arizona State University about his testimony primarily as a follower of Jesus Christ who just happened to be a professor of Mechanical Engineering.

Walter Bradley was my Ph.D. Advisor, mentor, and friend. Outside of my immediate family he has had a bigger impact upon me than any other person. In addition to his helping me and many other college students grow spiritually, he has had an enormous impact upon my professional life. He motivated me to consider graduate school, and then an academic career. Without him I would never have gotten a Ph.D. or become a professor for 36 years.

As some of you may know, Walter Bradley and I are long time members of the American Scientific Affiliation (ASA). The ASA is a professional society composed of Christians in Science and Engineering. Walter is a former President of the society´s governing board.

The ASA had its annual meeting this past week. At the Annual Meeting there is a time on Sunday evening for the group to honor members who have died during the past year. When Walter´s name was mentioned there were several nice tributes said about him.

I spoke up about what Walter has meant to me.

Former ASA Executive Director Dr. Randy Isaac had a very nice tribute read to the group. He honored Walter for his service to the ASA and for their long friendship.

ASA Executive Vice President Vicki Best told of Walter´s long and effective service to the ASA. She said she was privileged to know both Walter and Ann. She was happy she was able to meet with him last May.

Another former ASA Council President told me that Walter was a "Giant" within the ASA.

Before the ASA conference began we met with three former Colorado School of Mines students. All of them said how much Walter meant to their Christian lives while at Mines.

We know this is a difficult time for the family but we wanted to let you all know how Walter Bradley meant to us and to many other students and professionals.

Ann, Sharon, and Steven i am very sorry about the loss of your husband and father. Walter was a wonderful individual. We had many enjoyable times working together. One that sticks in my memory is when Walter, Ray, and myself team taught a large section of MEEN 340. In our evaluations one of th students wrote: "The three stooges live again." We laughed at that evaluation because we knew how hard we had worked. Walter was a joy to be around, and he was a quality person. God bless you.

Walter was a wonderful, kind and wise man that I met through High Ground, an annual Christian Ski Retreat in Beaver Creek Colorado. I often rode with him up the mountain on the snow-cat when he had limited his skiing days. He was a great teacher, a favorite teacher of mine, very humble, and was so gracious when he spoke to the group. I will miss him very much. Bob Fischer

Walter was such an inspiration to countless students, faculty, staff, and others over several decades. The Light of Christ was always shining brightly through him as he lovingly shared the Good News of Jesus Christ so boldly. All the people Walter reached for Christ will be able to fill a stadium in heaven one day.

I am sorry to learn of Dr. Bradley's passing. I was fortunate to meet him associated with Senior University. A favorite recollection, was his semester course on Near Death Experiences. Truly, an amazing topic, led by an even more amazing volunteer instructor. I am better, for having met Walter Bradley. Peace Walter, and 'see you later'.

We are deeply saddened by Dr. Bradley´s passing and profoundly grateful that God placed him and Ann in our lives when my husband was a Master's student at Baylor. Their Christ-centered marriage was a powerful testimony, and it had a lasting impact on our own. Through the way they loved, served, and honored one another, we witnessed the faithfulness of God. Dr. Bradley´s life and example inspired us to grow in our own relationship and in our walk with Christ. His legacy will continue to bless many.

Those of us fortunate enough to consider Walter a friend knew him to be an exceptional individual and ambassador for Christ. Now to see him again will have to wait for the next world.

It was my privilege to know both Walter and Ann during their years in Sun City. HIs enthusiasm for learning and faith was contagious! His life was certainly in the bracket we call "well lived." My condolences to Ann and all the family as you reflect on his life and navigate his loss. Ann Hay
