Walter Clegg Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Holloway Funeral Home - Salisbury on Feb. 22, 2026.
Walter G. Clegg, known as Gerald in Van Buren AR, was called to his eternal home on February 19, 2026, in Salisbury, Maryland, following a stroke. Born on November 12, 1935, in Marshall, Texas, Walter was a beacon of light and a pillar of strength to all who knew him. He was the cherished son of the late Rev. Harold Clegg and Leiva H. Blaylock.

Walter's life was a testament to his unwavering faith and dedication to his family. In 1953, he married his beloved wife, Edna Lavon Clegg, with whom he shared a beautiful journey until her passing in 2016. Together, they raised a loving family, including their children Mark Alan, Julia Anne, Bruce Andrew, Pamela Arlene, and late William Arthur Clegg.

A proud veteran, Walter retired from the US Navy as a Senior Chief Musician, where he not only served his country with distinction but learned electronics, which was not a defined skill for a Navy musician. Following his military career, he founded Musical Electronic Services in 1972, providing expert repair services for electronic organs and amplifiers. He graduated Magn Cum Laude with an associate's degree in business from Wayne Community College in Goldsboro, North Carolina, and paid for by the GI Bill. He calculated he was making 17 dollars an hour going to college and stretched a two year degree into four years. His most valuable course was economics, where he learned about lost opportunity costs, and bought a van instead of wasting his time fixing cars. He did pass on quite a bit of mechanical ability to his sons while he was wasting that time.

Walter's dedication to his faith was evident in his service to the Lord. He pastored several small Baptist churches in North Carolina, touching countless lives through his ministry. His involvement with the Navigators allowed him to disciple servicemen, and he served in multiple church in various roles, including teacher, deacon, music leader, and pastor. Upon his Navy retirement his commanding officer commended him for his "personification of the Christian ethic."

He leaves behind a legacy of love and faithfulness, evident in the lives of his siblings Joyce Greig, late Donald Clegg, late Dorcy Clegg, and late Neal Clegg. Grandpa's memory will be cherished by his grandchildren Heather Nichole, Elisha Lavon, Jennifer Leigh, Virginia Anne, Amy Marie, Matthew Davis, and Shannon Thomas, as well as his great-grandchildren Alsacia, Olivia, Brianne, Caleb, Trinity, Rhylee, Emma, Carter, Noah, Jaina Monroe, Jackson Darion, Camden Davis, Brooks Davis, and Reagan Lyn.

Gerald's life was a living example of the Gospel he so dearly believed in. He walked in the footsteps of his Savior, Jesus Christ, and dedicated his life to serving others, spreading love, and fostering faith. His impact on this world was profound, and his departure leaves an indelible mark on the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him. Even in his last years here at Calvary Baptist Church, he had become an active member, singing in the choir and arranging quartets. As he lost the ability to follow along and read his bible, he would frequently complete a scripture quotation accurately from memory that the pastor had started, which the congregation (and Pastor) found a great blessing.

As we bid farewell to Walter G. "Gerald" Clegg, we rejoice in the knowledge that he is now at peace in the presence of his Lord. His legacy of faith, love, and music will continue to resonate through the generations. We take comfort in the promise of eternal life and look forward to the day we will be reunited in the heavenly choir. Until then, we honor his memory by living out the values he held dear and by sharing the love of Christ he so passionately embodied.

Funeral services will be held in at Calvary Baptist Tabernacle, 337 Tilghman Rd, Salisbury MD 21804 at 1:00 on Friday 2/27th. Visitation starts at 12:00.

A second service and burial will be held on Tuesday 3/3 at 10: AM at Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, 2117 Alma Blvd. Van Buren, AR 72956.
