Walter J. Dembiczak, 88, of West Haven, CT passed away peacefully in his sleep Saturday May 17, 2025, in the care of The VA Hospital in West Haven.
Walter was born on January 14, 1937, in Meriden, CT to parents Sophie and John Dembiczak. He was drafted into the US Army April 7th, 1960, and served overseas in Germany as a (hard-to-believe) cook and (easy-to-believe) communications telegraph operator until his discharge on April 6, 1966.
Once Stateside Walter then earned his Electrical Engineering degree from Bridgeport University and his very first job was at United Illuminating for Power
Plant & Special Projects. He continued his career at UI for 28 years and his final position was Loss Control Engineer. One of his proudest achievements was the electrical engineering work during the design, construction and opening of UIs New Haven Harbor Station Power Plant. Walters nickname there became "Mr. Electricity"; apparently his ability to solve system problems made him the Go-to-Guy. In fact, even a decade after he retired, he would get phone calls to troubleshoot system malfunctions there!
Walter was predeceased by his wife of over 53 years, Jane (Babin) Dembiczak; his two sisters Violet (Dembiczak) Condon and Ella (Dembiczak) Marchese; his brother (IL) William Boudreau and his nephew Jon Boudreau.
He leaves behind his two kids, Carol Dembiczak and Michael Dembiczak; his "second-son", Oscar Ortiz; his longtime companion, Patricia Carlton; his sister (IL) Marie Boudreau; nieces/nephews: Leslie & Paul DeGiacomo, Justin & Brandi Boudreau, Marion (Marchese) Zambory, Eddie, Joey, & Brian Condon; his closest friend and advocate John Borkowski, longtime family friend Trish (Crayton) Feliciano, Selena & Enrique, and countless friends and neighbors that kept him company and enabled Walter to live independently in his own home until his final days. Most people called him Walt or Wally, which he loved.
He enjoyed numerous hobbies and social outings including (in the field) mineral collecting and classification; playing cards and chess; solving word and jigsaw puzzles; participating and creating music and art at the VA; and having thousands of conversations and a meal or two at "The Elm" Diner probably his favorite place in the world. Walter loved Italian food. He was, unfortunately, lactose intolerant but miraculously could always make an exception for pizza and lasagna.
Friends and family may visit Keenan Funeral Home, 238 Elm St., West Haven on Saturday, May 24 from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. followed by a Memorial Service at 12. Interment will be private.
