Walter Gibson

Walter Ronald Gibson, beloved son of the late Walter and Lula Gibson, was born on September 7, 1937, in Memphis, Tennessee. He attended St. Augustine Catholic School through the eleventh grade before transferring to Booker T. Washington High School, where he played in the band and participated in sports. After graduating, Walter proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy.
Walter pursued his Bachelor of Arts in Education at Lane College. During his time at Lane, he joined Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., where he served as vice president and subsequently as president of the Beta Phi Chapter. In 1963, he began a lifelong career as an educator with Memphis City Schools, teaching elementary and Jr. High School Social Studies. His passion for athletics led him to coach basketball and track, mentoring countless students both on and off the court. Walter will be remembered not only for his knowledge and humor but also for his unwavering belief in his students' potential.
Deeply committed to his community, Walter volunteered his time generously. He was actively involved in many political campaigns, taught adults to read through the Memphis Literacy Program, and was a frequent blood donor, earning recognition from Life Blood for his extraordinary contributions. As a charter member of 100 Black Men of Memphis, Walter dedicated himself to uplifting his community through education and economic empowerment.
On November 23, 1963, Walter married Anne Spraggins. Together, they were blessed with a daughter, Audrey Denise. During their nearly 62 years of marriage, Walter and Anne enjoyed traveling throughout the United States and abroad, hosting memorable parties and family gatherings.
Walter was a lifelong Catholic and a devoted member of St. Augustine Catholic Church. He was preceded in death by his sister, Bobbie Redmond. He is survived by his loving wife, Anne Gibson; daughter, Audrey Gibson; grandchildren, Adrianne Moore and Autumn Sample (Jeffery); two great-grandchildren, November Raine and Jasper Lee Sample; sister, Sarah Gibson; nephews, Vincent Redmond, Chauncy (Michole), and Anthony (Laschandra); sister-in-law, Toni Spraggins Haskin (Al); and a host of Washington cousins, adopted nieces, nephews, and friends.
Walter's legacy of service, mentorship, and love will be cherished by all who knew him.
The family will receive friends Saturday, November 8, 2025 from 9:00am-10:55am with a Celebration of Life to follow at 11:00am both will be be held at Metropolitan Baptist Church, 767 Walker Ave, Memphis, TN 38126.
Internment will be in West Tennessee Veterans Cemetery Wednesday, November 12, 2025 at 1:00pm
