Walter Hammond Hatchett, age 80, of
Bremen, Georgia, passed away peacefully on Saturday, December 28, 2024. He was born on May 11, 1944, in Atlanta, Georgia, to the late Durwood Hatchett and Christine Stone Hatchett.
Walter grew up in Waco, Georgia. He graduated from Bremen High School in 1963 and then continued his education at West Georgia College with an undergraduate and master's degree in economics. He later went into education and received his Specialist degree from Georgia State University. He started his career in education at Haralson County Schools, and later, he moved to Bremen City Schools. He was a math teacher and coach. He then moved on to financial advisement with The Equitable Company. He retired in 2012 with his wife Sue after traveling all over with her job as Senior Travel Coordinator in banking.
In previous years, he stayed busy as a dedicated Bremen First United Methodist Church member. At Bremen FUMC, he was Treasurer of the church and Chairman of sound and production for many years. He fulfilled many jobs at the church as he was a 'jack of all trades' and could fix anything.
Walter had four passions: his three grandsons, Bremen Rotary Club, Golf, and Georgia Tech. He never missed a chance to spend time with his boys. He was always very patient and taught them many life skills and how to fix anything. He never missed an event the boys were involved with. If one of the boys needed anything, all they had to do was call Pop, and there he was, no matter where they were or what time of day or night it was.
He was a 29-year member of the Bremen Rotary Club, Rotary President 4 times, and had 29 years of perfect attendance. He was an avid golfer and a diehard Georgia Tech fan.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Sue Stovall Hatchett, daughter and son-in-law, Suzanne and Danny Robinson of Bremen, daughter and son-in-law, Meri and Mike Suddeth of Carrollton, grandsons, Charlie and Caroline Robinson of Forsyth, Scout and Jaycee Suddeth of Carrollton and Jack Robinson and fiancée, Madison Leonard of Rome and his most precious great-grandson, Hayes Robinson of Forsyth.
Funeral services will be held to honor and celebrate Walter's life on Tuesday, December 31, 2024, at 1:00 PM in the Chapel at Hightower Funeral Home in Bremen, with Reverend Sharon White officiating. His grandsons, Charlie, Scout, and Jack, will share sweet memories of their Pop. Danny Robinson, Mike Suddeth, Charlie Robinson, Scout Suddeth, Jack Robinson, Guy Darnell, Mike Murphy, Dennis McBrayer, Johnny Barrett and John Fletcher will serve as Pallbearers. Honorary Pallbearers will be past and present members of the Bremen Rotary Club.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on December 31, 2024, from 11:30 AM until the service hour.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Bremen Rotary Walter H. Hatchett Scholarship Fund in honor of his 29-year commitment to Rotary and Service Above Self.
