Walter Lee "Doc" Hooks

Walter Lee "Doc" Hooks III was born on August 4, 1952 to Walter Lee Hooks, Jr and his wife, Edwina Hooks. Raised in Alexandria), he graduated from Francis Hammond High School in the Class of 1970. As a young man, he enjoyed music and played both guitar and drums in local bands.

Doc served his nation honorably in the US Air Force, rising to the rank of Sgt during his enlistment. As a Supply Sgt, he was responsible for maintaining equipment and ensuring that others had what they needed to be successful-it was a job well-suited to Doc's helpful character and attention to detail. A long-time resident of Purcellville, Doc was active in his local church, having risen to Third Degree Knight in the Knights of Columbus. Having learned of his heritage during visits with his grandmother, Doc also devoted much of his time, energy, and leadership skills to the Clinton Hatcher Camp of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, which preserves history, engages in various civic projects, and does considerable work decorating the graves of all veterans of all wars, in numerous cemeteries throughout Loudoun and nearby counties. In recognition of his many contributions, "Doc" was awarded the Raleigh Boaze Service Award in 2025.

Doc was predeceased by his beloved wife, Anne Marie, and his sister Diana. He is survived by his loving daughter, Amber, her husband Richard, and two sisters: Barbara Jean and Sandra. His life was blessed by three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren-of whom he was immensely proud!

Doc always loved the outdoors and animals-especially dogs!

He fought bravely against bone and lung cancers which beset him late in life. Even with the tender and compassionate care of his daughter and the assistance of hospice--it simply got to be too much.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Shriners Hospitals or St Jude Children's Hospital.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by Hall Funeral Home in Purcellville. Viewing will be from 6 PM until 8 PM on Friday, February 20th. A memorial Mass to celebrate Doc's life will be held at 11:00 on Saturday, February 21st, at St Francis de Sales Church in Purcellville, VA. Burial will follow in Hillsboro Cemetery.
