Walter F. Markowski passed away peacefully March 1, 2025.
After he was Honorably Discharged from the U.S. Marine Corps, Walter joined the Akron Police Department in 1963 and rose through the ranks to Lieutenant. During this time, he held various jobs such as commanding the Street Drug Enforcement Unit, Shift Commander of the Detective Bureau, and Assistant Commander of the S.W.A.T. team.
During his career as a working police officer he continued his education, graduating with a B.A. in Political Science from The University of Akron, in 1970. Walter also took advantage of the opportunity to continue his education through training offered by the U.S. Secret Service, Kent State University, The University of Akron, Ohio Peace Officer Training Council as well as the Akron Police Department and other agencies. Walter shared his knowledge by teaching classes at The University of Akron in: Criminal Justice, Police Ethics, Police Community Relations, and Felony Investigations.
Walter retired from the Akron Police Department at the rank of Lieutenant, accepted a Chief of police position in Copley, then served as an interim Chief in Sagamore Hills before working for the Sheriff Department.
Walter loved the water and enjoyed vacations in Florida. He enjoyed his golfing trips with friends to Myrtle Beach. He also helped run the Polish American Citizens Club. Walters' biggest joy came from time spent with his family.
Preceded in death by his parents; Frank and Anne (Dovicin) Markowski. Walter is survived by his wife; Barbara Markowski and children Elizabeth (Joel) Durkin and John Christopher (Brittany) Markowski and, brothers; Ed (Joan) and Frank (Lisa) Markowski, sister-in-law; Kathy Parks, grandchildren; James, Mary, Anne Durkin, Jordan, and Peyton Markowski, and many nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be held this Saturday March 8, 2025, from 11am - 1pm at the Hummel Funeral Home located at 500 E. Exchange St. Akron, OH 44304 with a Memorial Service to follow at 1pm interment at Holy Cross Cemetery in Akron to follow.
The family would like to extend their sincere thanks to Autumnwood Nursing Facility. In lieu of flowers please donate to the Alzheimer's Association or to a pet rescue of your choice.
